Just a quick question really, is it ok to put the fridge on (12v obviously! ) while travelling to your location?

My fridge instructions mention the removal of the air vents when you arrive and turn it on.

many thanks!

Providing you have the correct connections/relay in your car/caravan electrics the fridge should be on automatically. That was the case when we had a Dometic fridge but now we have a Thetford you seem to have to play around a bit with the setting is the van. As far as the fridge vents are concerned if they are like two open grills there is no need to do anything. Sometimes fridge vent covers are used in winter although I have never bothered.

yes we cool overnight before travel and then switch to 12 v on the fridge before setting off.it does not operate until the engine reaches a high level of revs to protect the car battery.i normally forget to take off the covers but they only need to be fitted at minus 8 to 10.

reason for cooling the night before is because we buy three or four days provisions and stock the fridge before we go.food is more expensive around holiday sites.

Here is a tip before you go away fill a 1.5litre bottle with orange squash. Then put it in your deep freezer until frozen then put it in your van fridge before you leave and it will keep your fridge cool for hours without thwe need to rely on your electrics.

With the food we put in the fridge before we set off we would not have room for a 1.5 Frozen bottle of orange squash, but we do run it overnight to prepare it before we load the food and then let the 12v electrics keep it good while travelling.

We have on the odd occasion forgotten to 'run up' the night before and just loaded the food from the house fridge to the caravan fridge just before we set off but not had a problem.

If like us you stop for some lunch then usually if you manage to not open the fridge door for too long then the food will be OK in there for a couple of hours especially the freezer compartment.

We also find that using the Winter covers with outside low temperatures helps the fridge efficiency as well as cutting out any incoming cold wind blowing into the caravan, and that was even in Spain in the Winter there!

When we stop for lunch, we turn the fridge onto gas.
We even turn on the (gas) heating if it is cold.

Why worry about opening the fridge, just put on the gas and carry on as usual.

We have our van on the drive, so turn on the fridge/freezer about 48 hours ahead( on electricity). This lets me load up what we intend to take well ahead, and add the "leftovers" just before we leave.

What I tend to do is hook up to mains and switch fridge on whilst sorting stuff out prior to leaving this will give time for fridge to get cool, then switch over to 12v just before we leave and yes make sure you remove ya vents. Hope this helps mate.
