We have just spent 6 nights away in our caravan (C&CC Chertsey) and my back is killing me!
No, its not the bed - we have a very comfy sprung interior fixed bed. Its trying to watch TY from the settee seats.
We rarely camp in this country, our trips are usually abroad for 1 - 2 mths, and any 'sitting' is usually outdoors or in the awning in our high back 5-way relaxer chairs, carefully chosen to be comfortable.
In the van the seats are low backed, upright, narrow and far from comfortable.
I've tried sitting sideways etc. I don't want to lie down, I just want to watch TV with my head/neck supported properly.
What does everyone do? I'd be very grateful for any tips.
Have just finished a course of physiotherapy for lower back/sciatic pain and my advise would be consult your doc. The physio is all about strengthening your trunks core muscle groups by excersice techniques.
I seem to suffer whenever away in the van? But now, i hope it's a thing of the past.

We usually make up the beds (2 bunks) before watching TV. Immediately behind the bunks are working surfaces on both sides, so we put the night pillows on end against the 'sidewalls' of the furniture, with a day cushion on end at the bottom. This gives fairly good support and we don't have a problem, in spite of being in our 70's.
But we have come across vans where the layout seems to have been very much ignored when it comes to accommodating every factor for living in the van. When choosing a van, I think a lot depends on luck. You cannot preconceive every requirement, and I don't recall consciously thinking about the needs for sitting and watching TV. Eek! We must have just been lucky!
You have my sympathy, I can never get comfy, I am constantly fidgeting.
I can't for the life of me think why they haven't yet brought out a layout with a fixed bed one end and proper seating the other, I am sure there are a lot of people who never have to make these stupid seats up in to a bed, like us and would love proper seating.
I sit at one side with my feet up and a pillow behind me and wifie sits at the other to watch telly in the evening. Nice and comfy. Our Telly is in the middle of the van between the front settee and the side dinette.
As OH has back problems, one of our criteria when buying a caravan was seats with reasonably high backs. That's why we bought a Burstner, the U-shaped seating area has extra high back cushions in the corners of the U, ideal for leaning against while having your legs up along the seats.

There is one manufacturer which provides a fixed bed at one end & proper seating at the other.Vanmaster offer a ‘dedicated lounge’ option on all their fixed bed models. They can do it as they build vans individually to your spec, not identical vans on a production line.I can’t see any of the large manufacturers doing it, just try asking for a cupboard instead of a 3 drawer unit & they’ll have a fit!
The plus side to this is very comfortable seating, but the down side is 2 less berths (& the cost of a hand built van).
One advantage of having an older van was deciding to change the parellel seating into an L shape, and building a small corner cupboard to sit the t.v. on.
I have chronic back problems and sit in the corner of the L shape with a pillow behind me. I do have to keep getting up and moving around in order to ease the pain, which is what I have to do at home. When away in the van in this country again try to move around a bit more, perhaps you were sat in one position for too long, (just a thought). I agree with you the awning chairs are far better.
we move the cushions so we are facing the front windows and have support at our back ,also sitting with feet up ,i cant get comfy in some of the newer caravans they just dont seem to have the same quality seating as the older models and definately dont have the leg room, dont think we are supposed to be sitting watching tele ,caravan is ment for out door pursuits maybe thats why they havent accomodated for comfy tv watching ,just a thought, are we not supposed to be sitting in the awning or out doing walking ,fishing etc ,kills my back as well sitting for a while on the settee
We have the seating which has the cabinet in the middle, we do the same as Jerry+Tina, we just lounge along the full length of the settee, my husband takes one side and I take the other, sit up with comfy bed pillow behind back, and legs up along the settee
I had a similar problem, so invested in a memory foam V-pillow from Dunhelm, not cheap at neary £30 each, but they do give good support for the neck, head and shoulders, and even beter with a conventional cushion stuffed into the gap of the V, they sure did cure my back pain.

I bought four (2 for each person) of those polystyrene bead filled cylindrical cushions. These will mould themselves around you and provide back support. You also might need a foam mat underneath your bum if the seats are really hard as it stops pressure pain.
