On this link http://glasgow.gumtree.com/glasgow/70/71861170.html

it shows Max weight at 1000kg and payload as 215kg which makes van 785kg.

 On this link http://www.caravanselecta.co.uk/touring-caravans/swift/swift-rapide-440/4-glx-cs123853.aspx

 it shows van as 767kg.

So you should now be able to work out from your cars kerb weight (use 85% of this) if it will tow

the rapide was the lightest of the Swift range of caravans for that era, it depends on what berth/length it is as they were available from a small 12ft 2-4 berth right upto a 16ft 5 berth. You may stand a chance with the smaller one, especially if your an experianced tower, but I dont think you would manage with anything larger than the 12ft/2berth without a big struggle and compromise in safety.

Check your specific vehicle on here

 http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp#tab1

It shows the kerb weight, 85%, and total towing capacity

A 3 door 1.6 tdci shows 85% as 1148, which means you should be o.k. with a caravan under than max weight.

Hi newtent what is the Ford Focus you have? 3 door, 5 door? 1.6tdci?

a 5 door 1.6tdci has a kerb weight of 1357kg, 85% of which is 1153. If the max weight of the caravan is less than 1153 you are within the recommended limits for towing.

A 3 door 1.6tdci has a kerb weight of 1351kg, 85% of which is 1148, so again if the max weight of the caravan is less than 1148 you are within the 85% recommended limit.

The 85% is only a recommendation but it is the figure most people use when working out if the car/caravan are a match.

Hope this helps.
