Hi we have just had our caravan serviced for the first time ,we have owned it a year ,it is a 2006 fleetwood meredian ,the inspector said there was a damp reading of 18 % by the door and 25% by the front right window ,he has checked everywhere and cant see any visible signs of water ingress and didnt seem to concerned by it .Could it just be condensation from the cold weather or should i investigate further ,I will obviously keep an eye on these areas and probably buy a damp tester myself to check regulary ,any thoughts appreciated .Rob

Probably needs the rubber resealing around that window, it's a common area to have to be done, it shouldn't cost a lot just to re set that one. We had all three front ones done on one of ours.

Although..........if you test it yourself you will find a high reading if you put it directly next to the window rubbers, don't know why but it dosen't seem to like the material it's made from.
Not wanting to question your man at all but there are some, lets say, naughty people who take advantage of this fact with innocent people.

I think I am right in saying the 18% is o.k the meter will always have a reading and this is acceptable, I think your 25% is at a lvel where there is nothing to worry about but it needs keeping an eye on, at 30% it wants looking into.
But If you are concerned get a couple of people to look at it.

may not be what you want to here but this site deals with the problem full time.see

http://www.caravanhospital.com/damp_test_at_caravan_repairs.htm

  • Readings between (0-15%) no cause for concern
  • Readings between (15-20%) dealer to make a note of these readings and re-check at next service.
  • Readings between (20-24%) possible early signs of ingress, look for tangible evidence or ask for a re-check.
  • Readings between (25-30%) moisture evident, remedial work required; may not need stripdown unless surface damage (staining, pimpling, and softness) is apparent. (There is a risk of wallboard deterioration due to retained moisture in the structure if resealed only.)
  • Reading (31 % and above) structural damage is occurring, deterioration inevitable. a full stripdown of the affected area is required.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

I should correct my earlier post ,it is in fact 18% by the window and 25 % by the door ,he said it wasnt too uncommon to show a higher reading by the door as this is where it has the most traffic ,the caravan looks spotless with no signs of any moisture ,so i will but a damp tester and keep checking ,really praying it is ok because i guess the costs involved can be very high which is very worrying .
