Hi, we have just purchased our first caravan and are totally new to all of this so please excuse me if this is a daft question.
Our 20 year old starter caravan did not come with a gas bottle or regulator, I have acces to cheap bottles of red bottled propane gas through work so I was wondering if it would be ok to use in our caravan to run the gas fire, the hot water boiler and the grill for cooking. Thanks
Absolutely fine and it won't freeze in cold weather. Also it all gases off leaving the bottle empty unlike the butane which still has gas in when it won't flow.
You'll need to fit a propane regulator of course

Hi. Just a thought. Make sure the bottles you get are suitable for the use and will take a standard regulator. I believe that some of the industrial ones, such as used on things like fork lifts, will not. However, hope it does all work out for you.
There are 2 types of 6kg. cylinders (Propane only), the standard steel type or the lightweight 'Calorlite' which are about half the weight. They cost more for a refill at around £24 but help if you are struggling with too heavier nosweight and trying to reduce it these are ideal. I had to do this on my old caravan because the spare wheel was positioned in the front locker which made the front end quite heavy. The Calorlite also has a gauge on top so you can tell how much gas is remaining in the cylinder which I find extremely useful.
shirl250: I will second that as well. I've used mine for reference on numerous occasions and ideal to keep in the caravan too. It's a very useful handbook with everything you need to know about electric, gas, solar panels, generators, towing and stabilisers just to name a few subjects.
I keep adding it to New Caravanner threads - it must get quite boring for everyone else. But as you (tango55) say it is quite invaluable and I shudder to think how people get on with no knowledge and no handbook either - I guess they just read everything on here !!
It is not recommended to use bottles greater then 6Kg when they have to be used outside the gas locker. Some sites do not allow this as it could be dangerous if they topple over. Also it is alot of weight to carry. The camping and caravan club do allow under some circumstances upto 15Kg now if the bottle is strapped to the caravan.
One thing that would also be advisable is to check the condition of the length of flexible pipe that connects the regulator to the rigid pipework in the van. It should be changed every 3 years even if it looks ok and should have the year of manufacture printed on it. It's available at most caravan dealers.
Welcome to the forum, by the way.
Pete.

The Camping and Caravanning Club have a number of what they call "datasheets" which can be downloaded from Here which are very helpful (and free!) including a couple on gas. The Caravan Club also do something similar but for quite a few of them you have to be a member to be able to get at them - the non member ones can be downloaded from Here
For anyone new to camping of any sort the Camping and Caravanning Club also have a introductory guide for each type of unit Here
