Cannot believe how long its taking to find a decent affordable van, looked at 100s online and 4 viewed, they are always advertised as in great condition but when you see them in the flesh, not great or they are well over priced. We have £6000 to spend on the right van, we want the end diner/double bed lay out.How long did it take for you guys to find the right van.
We searched and searched, viewed, discounted, we were getting very disheartened and decided to go for a nosey around some new vans to have a 'ah if only we had one the lottery' afternoon at our local dealership and we pulled in at exactly the same time as a van being towed in by the dealership owner, he asked if we could help and I said I think everything they had may be out of my budget, he asked what I was looking to spend and I said under £5k, he said they had just taken the van attached to his vehicle in as a part exchange and that it was sold originally by them new so they new it well, we went in it straight away while it was still attached to car and anyway to cut a long story short they valeted and serviced it the next day so I went back down the day after that and we negiotated as it was over budget and we bought it. All that searching and all that wasting of energy and one just turns up as a part ex when we just happen to be at a dealer. Dont give up, one will turn up and its definately worth checking out your dealers (or it was in my case anyway - especially as we really did get loads of freebies as caravan virgins and a 12 month warranty).

Our first one was instant, I found it on eBay and knew I wanted it before even going to see it.
The 2nd I didn't love, Hubby really wanted it & took me many times to the dealer to try & persuade me, I caved in & part ex/d our first one in tears, I put up with it for 1 holiday then swapped it for this one. Oddly enough it was the double dinette layout, I didn't find the beds comfy or big enough & it had hardly any worktop space.
The one we have now was a van we never dreamt we would ever be able to afford but luckily during Hubby's trips to Discover stalking van no 2 he'd become quite matey with the sales guy who when he found out they were closing the branch without notice or pay he gave us more than we'd paid for our van & sold us the new van for way less than Discover had bought it in for, he even threw in loads of goodies including a motor mover.
Wow Esther, what a stroke of luck. Funnily enough when we looking this afternnon I was telling OH how we had to get this right as I remember you telling me how you were on your third van in a year (I think it was a year!)
We've been looking for 3 weeks now and am getting disheartened too. We ideally want a fixed bed and long front seats to use as singles or double dinette but still must have long front seats. Double dinettes are hard to find, loads of side dinettes with end washrooms or two berths about. The vans with long front seats and fixed bed tend to be twin axle and too heavy for our Mondeo.
We've been to three dealers today, did the same on Tues and the same last week. Viewed two private vans this week, one was damp and stank to high heaven the other we liked but was overpriced, didnt sell on ebay and we are debating about ringing the owner and making him a more sensible offfer.
I'm still fed up with the lack of seller response to ads.

Funnily enough much less time than I imagined especially as we are always very exact as to layout and the quality of the van we want. Perhaps even more amazing to some posters we have always found what we required at the oft maligned Glossop Caravans!
When we wanted a used van they had (as ever to be fair) a huge stock of secondhand vans and when it was new, well we wanted either a Lunar or a Coachman and their deal was excellant.
I think a lot of it is about how many dealers you have in your local area and we have a lot which keeps choice up and price down and it is also about doing your research first and then bartering hard. I'm sure luck plays it's part too, but we've never had to look for more than a month before finding what we wanted.
We must have been really lucky. Found our 1st van on our 1st weekend of looking altho we rang after loads only to find they'd been sold pretty much as the ads went live. Finally found one that wasn't sold & jumped in the car straight away. Be got there in the nick of time - as we were paying our deposit another couple were telling one of the other sales guys they wanted it!
Again, with the one we've just got, I'd been browsing online for a week or so then went down to Worcestershire to look at one. Didn't like that one but did like another (now ours) at the same dealer. Thankfully, he's a good dealer & I have a very trusting OH. The 1st time OH saw the van was when we did the exchange
The other we liked but was overpriced, didnt sell on ebay and we are debating about ringing the owner and making him a more sensible offfer.

Thats how we got ours Rhonda, we let the auction run to the end (admittedly with me chewing my nails off!). OH was convinced it was over priced and it was as it ended with no bids, we then contacted the seller and negotiated from there.
We are looking again tomorrow , one private and one at a dealer. We are thinking the same private its on ebay and if we like it do we let the auction run and hope for no bids, its not overpriced though according to the online caravan price index. Will have a look at Glossop caravans online, one dealer we havent searched. Good to read about other peoples experiences, does fate play a part i wonder.
We looked on and off for 18 months after going to the show at the NEC. We decided on a 5 berth double dinette layout but struggled to find one for our budget. Spent ages looking for either a Bailey Auvergne, Lunar zenith or quasar but they were all too expensive at the time or I hated the seat fabrics. We eventually found a coachman amara (I'd always assumed it would be way to heavy for our Mondeo) but at 1400kg it was ok provided we are careful not to overload. The older models aren't as heavy and its a good way to get a better spec van, we're really pleased with it Front beds as singles are 6ft x 2ft 3
Amara 500/5 2001, bought it 2 1/2 years ago, 2 older couples had owned it before us, v good condition. We got a discount from the the dealer as we had no trade in plus water containers, pump, new battery. Paid less than 6K for it but prices seem to be a bit higher now for an equivalent.
It took us around 5 months. We went to the NEC in October and decided on the layout we wanted - fixed bed and side/corner washroom. We came out of the NEC convinced that we wanted a Bailey!
Early January we had a wander round Discover in Darlington (It was freezing with ice on the ground!) and came across a Swift Charisma 555 which was exactly what we are looking for, we just didn't quite have enough money saved up.
In the middle of February, the cash was ready and burning a hole in our bank account We were adamant on a Charisma 555 and found one for the right price through a small independent dealer. Picked it up on the 19th Feb, and we are due our first weekend away next week.
So all in all, it took us 6 months from deciding that we wanted to give up the tent and get a van, to towing it home
Like the T Shirt idea, one of the caravans we viewed today is a beauty, the best van we have viewed so far.
Watch this space, i think there is a deal to be done if we can get our funds sorted.
