Don't know the midlands at all, but I had my first trip a couple of weeks ago. I founds C&CC club site about 10 miles from where I live. Towed it there and then spent the rest of teh day reading the manual over and over and over and over and over again. Local is best, you know where the accessory shops are; you can run home to pick bits up if needs be.
Not really the question you asked - but would definately go local rather than scotland first time out.
Hope you love it though!!

We are going to Kingsbury Water Park next Monday on the C&CC special deal which is 4 nights for the price of 3 which will be our first trip out in our new caravan. We are going to have a good spring clean, check the awning and basically check that everything's working okay. It's the nearest club site for us but like ian220476 said, it's best not to treck too far away as we know all the nearest camping & caravan stockists in the area should we need anything.
Ooo yes, we love Kingsbury! Great dog walks, good park for the kids and we always seem to meet people we know! Have made good camping friends there who we meet up with regularly.
Without knowing exactly where in the South Midlands you are, its difficult to say but Blackmore C&CC may be close to you? This is a very nice site with good facilities. Would suggest you try looking at the C&CC webpage on the "Find a Site" section to find something close to home or use the search facility on here, where you can also check out reviews from other members.
...or use the campsite search facility at the top of this page! It's a brilliant resource, lots of reviews of campsites and links in most cases to the campsite itself.
A search on t'internet might bring up some meets with other likeminded individuals as well.
