This is a cross post as I posted it on the static caravan board as I couldn't find a relevant forum about owning tow caravans apart from specifics (towing, repairs etc).

Does anyone own a caravan to rent out? My parents used to have a static but we were thinking more of a tow caravan but on a seasonal plot so we can rent it out? Is that even allowed? We would consider a static if a tow caravan isn't allowed to be rented out but we wanted something that was a bit more flexible (ie we could use it several times a year at the seasonal pitch or elsewhere but also rent it out at the seasonal pitch when we weren't using it).

Does anyone else do this and is it the done thing?

Thanks!

It would depend on the terms and conditions of the site you want to put it on. Then of course comes the issue of insurance!

I would suss out some insurance companies and some sites with vacancies before you purchase a van. A lot stipulate own use or use of family and friends and exclude renting it out.

I would never let anyone else have the free run of borrowing my caravan, after a bad experiance when we let a work collegue of my Dads borrow our first caravan many years ago.

It was brand new at the time, and in perfect condition, imagine our shock when we got it back with a cigarette burn in the upholstry, and stinking of cat pee when they decided at the last min that puss was going on hoilday too, having been let down by a neighbour who was due to feed it whilst they were away.

Hubby wont even let our grown up daughters borrow it unless we go with them to keep an eye on how its being treated, but TBH i dont blame him, we have a couple of them with partners who are quite clumsy and accident prone, and one that thinks he can always take things to bits and put them back better than the day they were made, except he certainly cant!

we had a caravan on a seasonal pitch in the isle of wight, and the terms said we were not allowed to hire it out to other people, but family and friends could use it as long as we let them know in advance

not to be rude but there is no way would i let our pride and joy out for rent,it would not be respected whatsoever like the post above.might sound harsh but not far wrong.many club sites say there must be a car available at all times when booked in.ie.keswick or york where it it is liable to flood.i think it must also be a family member who is using it.

Many people, as we do, own a static caravan and rent it out. It can be tricky and problems can arise, but with a well thought out plan to approaching it and some good insurance it can work out pretty well covering in most cases a good portion of site fees!

Our website (www.caravans4let.co.uk) is for private owners who want to let out their caravan, you could take a look to see what others are offering where and for how much to give you an idea.

Thanks.
Julianne

Given the lightweight structure of most caravans I wouldnt dream of hiring ours to strangers. Its so easy to damage the cupboards etc and people hiring any kind of accomodation tend to be less than carefull

I agree. If I had something of value (not that I don't like my little ABI but it's not worth very much) I wouldn't hire it out.

All you need is someone leaning on the sides or the front panel because they don't know the do's and don'ts, and suddenly you develop a leak and wonder why....

Hi, dont think the caravan clubs allow you too. Maybe some private sites may,you would need to check with them, I only have small 2 berth van,and would not dream of hireing it out to anyone,The way I look at it is like,(letting your daughter go out on a date with some jack the lad) you would be up the wall wondering if all is ok, So not a snowball in H..L chance.

If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
