We've been looking to change our caravan to a layout more suitable to us. At the moment we own 2006 Swift Charisma 535 and have little money in the pot for exchange so the plan was to change to a caravan of similar age but with the layout to suit us. We've had a couple of trips to dealers and have been asked between £1750 and £2500 to exchange our caravan for one a year older. I've been reading articles about buying 2nd hand vans and there seems to be so many issues buying vans over 5 years old that I'm now starting to get a bit nervous and wondering if we're making a big mistake. The plan was always to upgrade the van in another couple of years. Should I wait or go ahead with a side ways purchase and spend 1-2K? What would you do?

Seems like a backward step to me, older van for a better layout but costing 2 k that youll never get back, plus what you will lose in time on the older van.

We're having to wait to get the 'van/layout we want and its killing me!

But i'd rather wait and get what we want than just change for anything. We know our current 'van and its paid for and still very usable even though we no longer use the fixed bunks at the back of the caravan. We're now using them as storage while on site. At least we have a caravan to use.

We changed our 'van about 3 years ago to an older one.The main reason was that our kids were rapidly outgrowing the 'van we had at the time-we had a Fleetwood Colchester and changed it to an Abbey Spectrum which was 3 years older but a lot more robust.Although in the summer my son uses a pup tent, when we're away in the winter he has to sleep in the 'van so we wanted something with long seats at the front to use as 2 singles(he's 5'5'' and only 12 years old!) and a double bed that can be made up at the back.

I've never regretted doing it-we wouldn't have got as much use out of the Fleetwood as we do the Spectrum.

By the way, you may get a better deal if ou buy privately than at a dealers.

I suppose it really depends on just how 'wrong' your current layout is for you.  If you can manage with it then you could wait & save more for a newer van.

We've recently changed to a lovely van that's exactly the right layout for our family group but I have to admit I'm not 'in love' with it.  Having said that we've only spent 1 night in it so it may well grow on me.  I reckon we've got 2-3 years until the layout we really want (but isn't practical for now) is on the cards & at that point we'll hope to have saved enough to get an almost new one.

Thanks for your replies - it's certainly food for thought. I'm not very good at waiting but we've had our swift for 2 years now and it's flown by. We've used about 10 times a year so the "wrong" layout doesn't stop us going away and I know it's in good nick. I think we might be better for the moment with what we've got although I am disappointed. I've now got to persuade the OH it's not a good idea after persuading him that it was.

I'm not very good at waiting either and we know what 'van we want but just haven't got the funds for it yet! We've had our current 'van (also our first) for 3 and a half years and, like you, it doesn't stop us using it. But i so want 'our' new 'van, its agonising and everytime we see one i plead with OH "can't we get it now?" and the answer is always NO! I can't stand it!

One day ...

We had a similar problem a few years back the van we had just didn't suit my wife as she wanted a large open plan end washroom instead of a cupboard with loo and shower and washbasin! We spotted a great van Swift Charisma 230 and it was 2 years older but the fact was it was in perfect condition.

We haggled with the dealer (Catterick Caravans) and they were happy to give us a two year warranty even though it was 5 years old. It was the best thing I ever did as we love the "new" van and enjoy our much improved caravanning experience but we have had a major fault repaired due to water ingress from the rear washroom window.

Why not try and do the same....the dealer may see your side of it and if he has checked it over fully and is prepared to give a warranty on it longer than the normal 3 months then that should give you confidence to buy.

Make sure the tyres are not over 5 years old you can find the dates on the side wall something like 1605 which is week 16 of 2005 when made. If they are over 5 year old get him to change them or face a bill of over £150 for 3 (if spare on van)

Hi Alison

Wait until you are in a position to 'UPDATE'. Your present van is sound and reliable - you may change to something older and end up with a problem van.

My advice keep saving your money and meanwhile be positive, enjoy your Charisma.

Just an update - we recently purchased a Bailey Pageant Vendee, same year as my Swift.  We had to pay £1300 but this included moving the mover and 3 new tyres(which was a cost that I was considering this year, anyway).  We've been away in it over Easter and we all love the new layout.  I'm still not totally convinced that it all made financial sense but we are so much happier with the "new" caravan.  Incidentally, the dealer we went to has now got out old caravan on the forecout for £1400 more than we paid for it 2 years ago, amazing!!

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

Alison

Same problem for us,,,,fixed bunks never used, so put her on Ebay and sold within 48hrs for what we were asking, therefore we had cash to do a deal and bought another from Ebay (locally) excellent deal they even showed us their new van so good reason to sell and our new van was immaculate,,,,excellent deal done both selling and buying,,, and lovely people to meet,,give it a go you have nothing to loose putting it on Ebay with a reserve, good luck with any decisions you make.
