Hello again I have been looking for our perfect van for ages. I seem to struggle as we have a low budget (about 5000) and want something with fixed bunks, in a reasonable condition and to pinch someones elses description - not an indian restaurant on wheels.

My instinct tells me that as a complete novice we should buy from a dealer so there is a guarantee on what we buy and that they will have checked the van from a safety point of view. However it seems impossible to find something in budget (I am not known for my patience!!!)

I have now seen a van on ebay that looks perfect for us.. but where do I start so I can ensure its ok - the price is exactly the list price with lots of extras thrown in. I have asked about CRIS registration and the owner tells me it isn't registered as it is a foreign van but that he has enquired and it could be registered -does that sound right?

He bought it new 2003 and has the manuals etc -where do I go from here. Thanks in advance

Hi CatieB,

Re the van I had a foreign one which was not CRIS registered when I bought it (from a dealer) and it was a Crystall Sprint with end bunks - great little van but wife wanted a larger washroom and shower so Part-exed.

Yes you can register it with CRIS as I did and from what I remember they asked for proof of ownership, etc and the chassis numbering....they have a way of marking the details on the new registration. For £30 (I think) they send a window etching kit and an electronic tag to put somewhere in van only you know exists.

However and although I have also bought an earlier van from a guy on Ebay I would make absolutely sure - in fact if not too far away go and see it first and do a few checks before commiting to purchase.

Finally some insurers do load the premiums for imported vans so best to check here.....my original insurer would not cover my Crystall for some reason!

As long as the seller has original purchase reciept & he 'looks ok' ie selling caravan from a private adress etc. You should be ok as regarding title. You really want to see a service history as well. The 'van should have been serviced & damp tested annually.

Obviously check 'van is dry but use any lack of service history to get price down & if tyres ain't been changed in the last 5 yrs you should change them asap. You can Cris reg it yourself if you buy it but you have to pay for this.

Before handing over any cash, do a HPI check to make sure that ther is no finance outstanding on it. Also make sure that it is to British standards as some foreign caravsn only have a small hot water supply and water has to come in via a direct feed and not from an Aquaroll.

We're still looking for a caravan, and I was against buying privately at first, until someone suggested getting a qualified engineer to look it over.  We've seen one we like, and we will go and view it, if it is nice enough, we'll put a deposit down subject to an inspection.  £90 or so pounds is well worth sacrificing over a useless caravan.

Like me, buying from a dealer is great for reassurance, but it seriously limits options when it comes to a decent year, at a price you can afford.
