Hi,

after years of tents, trailer tents and latterly a Conway Crusader folding camper the wife has nearly beaten me and convinced me for the need of a caravan.

Looking for something up to 7k and we have 2 adults and 3 kids (7,6,4).

Any advice on a good caravan and layout we should look for. Anothe rissue is 5 or 6 birth and the advantages that may bring (sometimes have the mother in law but this should not be the deciding factor.

Used to towing the campervan at 5 m long but in my head the step up to a van of the size to take all my family scares the hell out of me.

Never learned to manouevre the camper as you could push by hand. So i think a course is in order.

Think i need some reassurance that with care and consideration the towing lark will not be that bad. We have 2006 galaxy that should be more than adequate for towing.

Any advice would be truly welcome (especially the reassurance).

Folding camper going up for sale, caravan here we come.

Lawsy

If you are used to towing a folder its not a big change to a caravan. You won't be able to push such a large van easily but this is simply overcome with a motor mover. After a couple of times out you will be well used to it. If you are really worried take a club training course.

I think layout is very much personal choice. Look at lots and see what works.

Make sure yours is dry!

We have a motor mover and we use it for all manoevering - it saves a lot of arguments !!  When arriving at our pitch we just pull up, unhitch and use the mover to pop the caravan into the perfect position on the pitch. When leaving we move the car to a reasonable position for take off, then use the mover to position the caravan perfectly over the tow ball. As I said - no more arguments and now pitching and un pitching is nice and relaxing !!!

I'm sure you'll be fine - enjoy.  I moved from a trailer tent to a caravan years ago now - I can't remember it ever being a problem.  Go for it - you know you want to...

I did the same as D S B and went from trailer tent to caravan. The worst thing to overcome is your own fear. I admit I was terrified when I hitched up the van for the first time but, after a couple of miles, I realised it was no big deal. I would strongly suggest a motor mover as there are some occasions where you cant manoever with the car and trying to move it manually is impossible. If doing a course will give you more confidence by all means go for it, but I found that with a little practice it isnt really that difficult. The worst thing is reversing - but take it slowly and if it dosent go right, start again

We did exact same thing and dont regret a moment of it. Do check the kerb weights and either go on a course or practice manouvering. Once you getb the hang of it pushing wont be a thought. There is nothing better than not worring about wet canvass for the last day of holiday and dreading pack up day.

I was given a caravan completley free in february, and have never towed anything in my life and was terrified, so I ask my brother inlaw to come with me to pick it up and tow it home for me. no problem he said but as soon as we got there he gave me a few pointers and left me to do it on my own. best way being thrown in at the deep end. had no problems the best advice was take your time take the corners wide and the car who is right up your backside just ignore him and pretend he is not there, and when he does hurtle past you with his engine screaming in 3rd gear and he is bright red in the face with anger. when you get to the next set of lights and he is sat in front of you at the red light, give him a little wave
