Hello Phil.

Some great advice there, really found that useful - thank you.

As you touched on tyre pressure I'm interested to know if you or anyone else has the tyron bands fitted to their wheels. They seem on the face of it to me something that should be high on my shopping list.

If anyone has them would be interested to know who fitted them for you, I see Kwik Fit have an advert on the Tyron website but never been a big fan of Kwik Fit..

I have the bands and you will find a mix of views on their benefits (or otherwise) from posters on here. The bands will aid stability, in the event of a blow out, and give you the opportunity to tow the caravan to a safer place for changing the tyre if that blow out occurs on, say, a dual carriage way. Don't use Tyron Bands as the be all and end all of safe towing

A correctly loaded, and weighted van; a correct safe match of car and van; correct air pressure in the tyres; correct torque for your wheel nuts; sensible driving within the speed limits; windows and vents closed etc, will all greatly assist stability and the loss of that is where the problems can arise if your tyre blows. Tyron Bands will aid that stability.

My own view, before parting with my money, was that any aid to safe towing for an expensive van was worth it. I have not yet had the opportunity to see how Tyron Bands work in practice and I hope I never do!!!

I also have Tyron Assist as, for £95 for three years cover, they will come out and fit a new tyre. Green Flag etc do not provide the tyre if you call them out. So, once on a site you then have to go and find one. Not had to call them out yet so can't comment on how good the service is. They claim to be with you within two hours of being called out.

Quick Fit came to my house to fit the bands which was quite useful and the lad was very good. A band on each of the vans tyres was £176.50.

As I say, Tyron Bands have a mix of support and should be used as part of a combination of safety issues. Before every journey I make sure that my vans tyres are at the correct pressure as well as the pressure for the car tyres. I also Torque the wheel nuts and they have never been found to be loose. Maybe the day I don't bother they will be!! We also check the lights before every journey. On the other side of the coin, the majority of folks I see leaving a camp site don't bother to do these simple, few seconds, jobs. Bet they get home safely...............(a) I just prefer to know everything is ok before I set off....and (b) I like to have my insurance claim (if there is one) bullet proof.

Phil

Thanks again Phil. I agree with your philosophy, anything to aid safety has to be a good thing.

I am unlikely to forget light checks, my father used to have me checking them as a kid before we ever left the campsite..

Love the Threshfield picture by the way..

Tyron bands. Are they now necessary? My tyre man tells me this week that all wheels, since the mid 70s, have a rim on both sides to prevent the tyre going in to the centre of the wheel. (that is roughly what tyron bands do) He tells me that it take about 5 tonnes to remove a tyre over that rim. He recommends that it is not necessary to fit the bands now. All comments greatfully listened to.

congrats on the new van,i did something similar almost two weeks ago,we had been looking at vans to get an idea on what we wanted,id been to Lowdams and about 7 other dealers,we had no intention of buying and like yourself if you had told me in the morning that i would have bought a van by late lunchtime that day,i would have said that you are mad.Well  we walked into Elite caravans and saw a Welt Bummler 515 and it was love,we got out walked around the rest of the vans and came back to it,it was exactly what we wanted, then much to my amaizement my wife said to the guy, whats your best price? and what do we get for that? okay heres the deposit.

so we pick up our Welt Bummler 2005 515,in 36 hours time, not that im counting

well done you. We went to buy a second hand van but didnt fancy them, only one ticking all boxes was a new one oops deposit down and we off. we use those yellow ramps and a spirit level on the floor to level side to side whilst attatched to the car then use the jockey wheel to level front to back. always works well.

Congratulations on your new van.  Did you but it on the way to the pub or on the way back!!

Seriously, on the question of levelling.  I sometimes find that (especially on softer grass) it in necessary to re-level the van (tighten the corner steadies)  after a few days.  The van can appear to be 'loose' to the ground where weight has compressed the ground.  Don't over tighten the corner steadies though - they are meant to be steadies and not to lift the van off the ground.  Some always use a spirit level.  I have to be honest and say we do not always - but do if I feel it is not correct..  I often rely on 'eye' and must be quite good at it as we have never had a problem with the fridge - it has always worked very efficiently.

It gets more difficult if you have to raise the side of the van by ramping the wheels.  Even with a motor mover, the van seems to want to go in its own direction.  Perhaps after all these years I am still doing it wrong?
