Just wondering what type of caravan buyer you are.  Do you buy your dream caravan with the intention of keeping it for years and years or do you trade up like a car every 2 or 3 etc years??  I know that we will only be keeping ours upto a maximum of 3 years, mainly due to the children growing and a different layout will then suit better, but does there become a point with a new van where it makes better economic sense to trade it in whilst fairly new rather than keep it.  What do you do?

Never having had a new van I cant really offer an opinion. We bought this one [1991] as a fast track back into caravanning after a rather disastrous foray back into tenting. Also I wanted a ' fixer ' that I could play with. We really don't keep them for long and I have this ' thing ' about changing them every year!!! Cant explain it. The next one will be a long term keeper tho as we have to look at economy now as we get older. While in service we did have one for 4 years, but due to constant moving etc it didn't get used much in that time.

I find that over a period of time the 'van becomes part of me (or v.v) and I don't like to change it. Better the devil you know comes to mind especially with second hand vans.

Bit like asking people how much they earn, I'm guessing answer is down to folks income & their financial priorities. You cannot really compare caravan with car tho, car is essential for most folks & if you want to drive long distances reliably you need to chop it in every few yrs if you can.

All that governs a caravans' on road reliability is condition of coupling/brakes/bearings/tyres/lights. Fortunately Al-Ko chassis spares going right back to 80s are available off shelf so it is as easy to keep an old caravan as road reliable as a new one.

To answer you question, in terms of hard cash it will never make economic sense to trade an old 'van in for a new one, it does make sense if you can afford it but not if you can't.

If I hadn't decided (for various personal reasons) to get a campervan, I doubt if I'd have got rid of my caravan for years. It was a 1996 'van and far superior to a lot of equivalent new ones we looked at, in excellent condition and everything worked. If it ain't broke etc.

I can't refer to actual figures but I guess the depreciation is the highest in the early years and the longer you keep the van the lower the average annual "cost of ownership", unless of course you are unlucky and have large bills for water ingress or the like after warranty expires.

I am only on my 2nd van, first one was a 1998 Abbey that we bought to confirm turing was for us. Lovely van and only sold it as we wanted to tour all year around and so wanted better heater, internal water tanks, better insulation etc.

Intention is to keep current van for a long time. Chose a Vanmaster as have lifetime water ingress warranty as long as we keep up annual servicing and can pay for a complete "refresh" if we want to.

Hi, Would not trade in van every three or four years, dont see the point of it, if van fulfils your needs, then would keep van, and if needs changed, then change van as required.

We bought cheap old and small to see if we would like the downgrading from our trailer tent. Its OK, so we will get something to last 10 years.

I think once we find the perfect layout we will probably stick with it for a good few years. As a couple our requirements probably won't change that much apart from the fact that we would like a bit more space/maybe a fixed bed. At the moment we are casually on the look out for something that will fit us slightly better. No rush as there is nothing else wrong with the current van. Plus you never know what sort of lemon you may end up with ! We probably wouldn't ever buy a brand new one though.

So far we don't have a great track record for keeping them any length of time

Had our 1st van (1999) for a year to check we liked it.  2nd Van (brand new 2009) also lasted a year altho changed for different reasons.  We intend to kep our current one for 2-3 years or when DS (15) is old enough to decide whether he wants to come with us or stay home with his big bro.  At that time we'll buy our dream van - fixed bed.

Having lost piles of money on our 2009 van I don't think we'll buy brand new again.  We'll look for one a few months old & let someone else take the hit on the VAT & initial depreciation.  Sounds quite nasty but we've had our turn...

We bought new 4 years ago for the very first time  and will   never do  it again,  lose too much money  last year we looked at another very nice  new van   and would have had to put 11 grand + our van  so decided to keep ours. We are looking to change to a moterhome in about 3 years time so will hang on.

You asked the question, I answered it. Contained in my post is information some forum members might find of use. They now know that it is easy & cost effective to keep an old caravan running...This forum is for information, not lighthearted banter, I assumed you knew that & addressed your op accordingly.

I would say in most, but not all cases folks' caravan buying habits are directly linked to their income. I'm guessing the only ones to disagree with that statement will be the tiny % to which it does not apply.

I'm one of those who made my purchase based on what I could afford and what met our needs.

We purchased an old caravan that was tired and damp. We have enjoyed working on the makeover, and we have experienced lots of enjoyable trips away - and there will hopefully be many more to come.

To me, long term value is more to do with the enjoyment we will get out of it, rather than any financial benefits.
