Hi all tin tenters, i have recently purchased a Abbey Gts 416 van, upon hooking up the Whales water pump it is making noise as if to appear that it is working but it is not drawin any water upward into the van, anyone have any tests or advice as to how to test before i buy a new pump ??
also the 12 V is not working the battery was dry, but have rechared it to no avail.
Tap the pump against the side of the barrel whilst submerged and whilst the pump is running, it probably has an air lock which won't allow the water to draw up the pipe. This advice was taken from the 'Caravan Handbook' by John Wickersham.

Hi,is the battery fully charged,if so the pump might have an air lock, open all taps switch pump back on try and force the air lock out by opening and closing different taps this sometimes works,if not try and borrow a pump to see if that works regards Tom.

help !!! :)
I reckon your pump problem could be related to the duff battery personally. You could temporarily hitch some wiring from a good 12v source and connect to your pump to test (chuck it in a bowl to test) but I wouldn't condemn the pump until you've got another leisure battery sorted.
if you have EHU the pump should run without a battery,a flat battery will not help.if the green or red light on your monitor is lit and the pump is running with no water you have an air lock.check also the drain stop is closed or water will come in and go out again.if you have cold water running and not hot water coming to the tap then the non return valve could be faulty in you water heater. check you do not have a leak outside near the pump or the pump cannot maintain pressure and will run constantly. both the 12volt and the pump switch must be on.

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Michael, you're absolutely correct and offer some good extra advice and tips to check, but I'm afraid there is a strong possibility of the duff battery being the cause too.
The EHU running the pump is dependant on the type of 12v charging system used and there have been several threads recently where folk have had pump issues that have been traced to failed batteries. Also, dependant on the state of the 'dry' battery, it could well be putting further load on the charger which will impact it's output.
Perhaps it's wise the Op make all checks you've suggested as well as checking pump on seperate good 12v source, but without a good leisure battery he could be flogging a dead horse and go round in circles.

agree fully yes,the other thing is about the battery being flat it is just possible the charger is at fault as well and not charging the battery or giving a 12 volt supply of any kind on EHU. as i remember our pump started playing up when the battery was down on our last van.i had to replace the battery.

Guys, Thank you for all the great advice, yeah battery was flat as a pancake and damaged, the pump is working now it was indeed airlocked, thanks again for all the advice.

Glad your sorted, and thank you for telling us. So many folks come on and ask for advice but we never know what the end result was.
