We have just moved our caravan to be on a permanent caravan site, it is not a seasonal pitch, just storage where they tow it in and out and put it ready for you on a pitch.  Can anyone advise me as to what security you can put on your caravan when you have it in storage on a permanent site, where the site tow it on and off the pitch, they don't put on any wheel clamps, as they are so close together, and also I have heard it a fire risk.

I don't know if you can put your alarm on, as does it have a tilt sensor, which means it will go off when towed

We have a Phantom tracker, though not sure if this will go off, when it is towed to or from the compound.

They will put a hitch lock on.  It's just that if you have any of the above security listed on your insurance schedule, and you don't use it, then you don't have any cover, I know that because I have been speaking to my insurers the Camping and Caravan Club insurance.  Where we used to keep it, the storage site was so far from anyone hearing if your alarm went off, that we decided not to set it, because we didn't want to flatten our battery, because if we did that our Phantom tracker wouldn't work, and we thought it was more important to have the tracker working, however, we have found out that we wouldn't have been insured as we had the alarm listed on our policy, and if it's listed and not used you have no cover, so just be aware of that.

Can anyone else tell me what security they use when they have no access to the storage facility.  Many thanks.

My storage site insists on keeping a copy of my insurance policy. They then note what items need to be on the Van at all times and have the necessary items and keys of their own. This is not a permanent site but storage only but even when they move the Van from the central compound into the secure collection area, they re-apply ALL the necessary security measures as per my insurance schedule.

Hi Mrs Mop, Yes your tracker will be activated when van moves,IF got alarm listed with insurance and not switched on Insurance unlikely to pay out for thieft or damage to van,If you can not get accsess to storage site,(check on van and battery (tracker/alarm)) then would move storage site, Post on here few month ago (van damaged in storage, very close together, site denied any damage, dont know if resolved yet) damage can happen on any storage site, and if you are not allowed on that storage site (any damage will be down too them) the down side of not seeing van in storage, you could have damage that crackes the panel, and lets in water, and it could be months before it is discovered,  A bit silly paying high insurance for van and disabling the very things you have fitted to protect it,(you would be handing over cash to insurance compamy for nothing) Only you can decide if it is worth risking your van.

Thanks for the replies so far, the storage site will put on the hitchlock, and we will put the tracker on, and ring to let them know that it is being moved, but with regards to putting on the Alko wheel lock it's a real fiddle and I can see why they don't want to bother with it, and also as I said if there was a fire they would want to get the other vans moved quickly.

Fortunately the storage compound is very secure, with CCTV, and also an alarm beam, which rings their mobile if anyone walks across the beam, and as I said with no-one being able to go to the compound, at least it raises suspicion if you saw anyone there other than the owners of the storage.  It is designated a secure approved site, with the insurers.

I must admit that was one thing I did worry about.  We could go there

once a month at least and hook up to the electric, but when the

site shuts in November until March, I suppose it could be a problem

            which I hadn't considered.

Hi Mrs Mop, I would phone insurance company and give all the info of your van on storage, what security devises will be on van while in the storage site, what security the site has, and you may find that they will cut you some slack, As for the battery situation, you could try to have 2 or 3 batterys connected together, but dought if they could last that lenght of time, There could be an other alternitive  as some of the other members on here have done, that is to use solar panels to charge battery, seams to work for them, if you start new topic asking about solar panels to charge your battery while in storage, you will get the members that did this on their van, and how they did it, Hope thats of some help.

We have a solar battery charger from Maplins - won't recharge a flat battery but keeps it topped up when we are not in the van.
