Hi. The mixer tap on our kitchen sink in the caravan has a nasty sharp edge where it looks like the silver coating has peeled off. I managed to slice my finger on it twice last weekend. I really do not want to have to replace the whole tap so has anyone any ideas on how I can repair or cover it? It's actually the screw in part of the tap with the filter in. Can you replace these?
Maybe they are plastic and it's the screw-in filter part that's chrome but something is definately peeling off and slicing my little piggies. I have a similar problem on my gear stick in my Mondeo too. Again it appears to be a silver coating peeling off plastic.
The gear stick in a car is made of steel and finally coated with chromium plating. The chrome plating could peel off due to poor preparation during manufacture but I have never heard of silver plating on plastic taps. Plastic can be sprayed silver but it would actually rub off with wear and not peel as such. I think you need to be a bit more specific as to exactly where the silver coating is peeling off so that you can achieve an answer to your problem.
I know exactly which part of the tap you are referring to now, it's like a silver cap with with fins inside which you called the filter. The only remedy I can think of is to purchase some waterproof plasters, dry the tap well first to remove any wetness then apply a one of these plasters. It may not be a permanent solution but it should during the meantime help in stopping slicing your finger. Unless the cap can be removed (which I don't think it can) then the permanent solution is to eventually buy a new mixer tap, remove and discard the old one and replace it with new. Tentz mentioned Araldite which you could try if the waterproof application fails but this type of repair is normally applied for splits or breaks in plastic that can be re-bonded together to make a permanent repair. At least it's worth a try and you can't lose anything by attempting to glue it but there may be more suggestions yet from other members.
The silver has also come off the same in our Indiana, I took them off and replaced them with steel that I got from a plumber. They dont add much weight and we now don't get sprayed with high pressure hot water.
Thanks Richie and Tango55, are you two related? Sorry I haven't replied over the weekend but we've been busy. Problem's sorted now as we have just traded in our Swift for Bailey. It wasn't just the taps, it needed cleaning too.. Unfortunately the new caravan has the same style tap so I shall be keeping a close eye on it.
