We've been to look at a caravan and I did a CRIS check, even though the guy had bought it from an established Caravan dealers 2 years ago (he paid cash and showed me the receipt). It is still showing as on finance from 2001 according to the HPI/CRIS records. It was originally with the Bank of Scotland who were then sold off to 2 other companies to administer the finance.
Is it a common thing for the finance to be left on record in error? as it's a Saturday I couldn't find out if the finance company are still owed money on it. Is it safe to assume if the finance company send a letter to confirm they aren't owed money on it and remove it from the HPI records it will legally be mine?
If finance is owing, no matter how much you pay for it, you won't own it. You can check next week but tread very carefully. Could be an administrative error I suppose.

If the current seller did not notify change of ownership with Cris it is quite possible that finance could still be owing. Does he have Cris doc. in his name? Sounds like one to avoid.
Caravans often change hands without new owner bothering to notify Cris(£12 fee)& after several changes of ownership without notification, a new owner notifying Cris of change of ownership can be in for a nasty shock, ie owed finance or stolen caravan.
The dealer he bought it off notified cris. He then received a letter (which I've seen) to ask for the £12 to complete the transfer, which he never did. The dealer is chasing it up this week, and nothing short of a letter from the finance company clearing the information off the CRIS database and sending me a letter to confirm will make me complete the transaction. I've done a bit of googling and it does happen from time to time.
To think I nearly never bothered as it was bought from a dealership with cash, and the guy showed me the receipt in his name is worrying. It just goes to show, it's not the seller you are buying from, but the history of the caravan from day 1 that needs checking.
We had the exact same thing it was something to do with the dealer that bought the van had an agreement with finance co we called dealer van owner bought it from they spoke to some one we called cris afte 48 hours all clear may be similar

Yes, and yes. If the finance company say the agreement is settled, or that they have no further interest in the caravan, then it is clear.
Hi, Just gose to show you, You cant be to careful,it looks like the dealer is not that into customer care or servis, once he had sale,(at very least he has been neglectful), Good Luck, Hope all works out for you.

If in Doubt Check it Out.
In any event it would be the dealer that would be liable. The current owner may be able to claim back all of his money from the dealer if there is finance still outstanding on the caravan. Legally the dealer was not in a position to sell the caravan and should have done a HPI check before selling it.
However it is possible that somewhere along the line a digit got changed and the finance is actually on another caravan. It is good to see people being sensible and doing HPI checks especially when ther is a large sum of money involved!.
Spoke to Bank of Scotland who confirm that they have no interest in the caravan, and have removed it from the HPI database. Will give it a day or two to update systems and recheck CRIS before collecting the van next week! Phew!

Brilliant news! Just as well that you did do a CRIS check as you may have had a similar problem when selling it on.
