i have a small caravan with a caravan mover fitted,my drive is gravel, at present i have a pneumatic jockey wheel but plastic rim and it digs in would i be better of with a pneumatic with steel rim or just an ordinary wide wheeled jockey wheel

We have the same prob with ours but its the gravel at the site thats the problem..

Hi stuart1955, Gravel on your drive could be a bit deep,or to loose,could try to let some air out of tyre, to let it spread out a bit,may stop wheel digging in, wider wheel may help?, some of the other member, that have had same problem should be able to tell you how they overcome the problem, My drive is mono blocked, so cant offer much advice, Though would have thought that the mover should manage to move van even when wheel digs into gravel, I have narrow soild wheel and when on gravel site I dont have any problems. hope this helps.

I use the alco one with a built in noseweight gauge, it has a shock absorber built in and the wheel is solid but low profile.
It works fine in all conditions so far

Seen many caravanners letting the air out of their pneumatic jocky wheels when parking on a very gravelly hard standing. Does it do the wheel/rim any good?

I bought mine from these guys:
Coldene castors

It's a small blow up tyre which fits a jockey wheel perfectly. If you give them a call, they will know exactly which one will fit, remember to tell them your load weight.

My drive is soft. The large purpose made blow up tyre is also good, but is so big you have to keep taking the jockey wheel off when in transit as it doesn't wind up high enough to clear the road humps. The small tyre means I don't have to do that. I have a soft drive, not exactly gravel, more shaley sort of drive. It doesn't dig in and bury itself though like the ordinary one used to.

The other thing you could do is get a piece of ply/planking or two and just keep moving it from front to back as the mover/caravan progresses. I use this with my Mr Shifta - got the caravan sorted, then the Mr shifta castor wheels started digging in! So I use a few pieces of ply to drive the mr shifta over and the van and jockey wheel are ok.

The pneumatic wheels are not as good as people like to think and do bog down or burst easily I have a small trailer for gardening and I wheel it around the garden and the jockey wheel used to dig in I brought a pneumatic wheel and it was not much better I then was advised to buy this. it is a little pricey but I would not buy anything else. I had used the wheel in a pneumatic wheel frame it was good until I bent the cheap jockey wheel frame bumping it up on to slabs regually I then splashed out and bought the full jockey wheel.

I am told this is designed for use on a plant trailer on soft ground

 pneumatic wheel is not as good as i needed.i bought a new one and had to take it off because i jammed under the  A frame..could you not use a long piece of wood say 6 inch wide by half inch placed on top of the shale to carry your jockey wheel only.

Just go backend first then the jockey wheel will not dig in. As they only dig in going forwards

brought a alko heavy duty pneumatic steel wheel which seems fine and went on backend first when we got back after easter and all was fine,thanks for all the advice.was the first time we had properley used powertouch mover and made life so much easier wish i had got one ages ago

I had the same problem with our new van soft graval on drive jocky wheel digging in I have no problem going up the drive backwards but getting it out forwards it always digs in so I went to Towsure and got a large numatic complete with bracket only cost £28.50 job dunn.I hope this helps you.
