Thank you all for your replies, they have really helped us narrow our decisions, which are cat flap in the shed or garage door and auto feeders or rehome.
I will let the wife make the final decision!
Thanks again, much appreciated.

my cat is 19 years old . thats how long they can tie you. this cat was for my son who has left now .we are tied. my sister is coming to feed her for us. kennels wouldn't take her because they said she is too old. i was going to try the RSPCA kennels. she is poor thin and doesnt eat very well. i would take her with us but she cries all the time. very loud.
i know how you feel she is stopping us going away we have always worked long hours . i still work and would like to go away a few times a year . but it is having to rely on others.
i am going to pay my sister . there may be someone who would like to have a little job and be paid to look after them for you .

is there not a trusted teenager you could pay to feed and spend some cuddle time with the cats while you are away. most cats are happy aslong as there home and fed as there not to loyal but if there an oldre teen who could do wit some extra cash with perantel back up that would be an idea we have done it in the past and it worked realy well
This is what we do. I had a cat escape from a cattery a few years ago and we were heartbroken.

FAO Nora - it sounds as if your cat may have hyperthyroidism, she has some of the symptoms. One of my cats has just been diagnosed with this. There is a remedy, one pill every day will sort it.

Well I'm going to bite the bullet and take my old cat with us this time. She loves being near me and doesn't go out much any more, so I'm going to try her coming with us. I don't like leaving her in the cattery - (although if I'm truly honest its the cost of 2 cats in the cattery that's bothering me)- and I don't like leaving her at home, with just a neighbour to feed her, for weeks on end. My OH is not working now so we can go away for longer, which is great news for us but not such great news for the cost of the cattery!

We too have a new addition, we are taking the cat with us this time, we have a harnis? And a long lead to take her out, get her used to the site, (seasonal pitch) in case she does do a runner. We won't let her loose if we can help it, she sleeps with our dog a lov's the cage. Just a note on the awning door. Don't open! Shout first. Lol

We take our cat with us and never had any problem. She curls up somewhere in the caravan and goes to sleep. We do not keep her on a harness.

Perhaps if the one settles down, then the other will also. So try the older one first and then take it from there. Ours has been caravanning with us for the last 5 years and she is not almost 16 years old.

We take our cat with us in the van wherever we go. If the site is quiet, and not too crowded she'll happily wander out for a walk and chase a few birds and squirrels. Not that she ever catches any! If its crowded, there's dogs nearby or its raining then she's happy to sit in the van or in the awning and watch whatever's happening outside.
She also worked out long ago that nobody can reach her on a caravan roof either!
She travels in a cage, which I bought for about £15 on Ebay. Its left out all the time, and she frequently goes to sleep in it at home. Although when she's had enough of the caravan she'll go and sit in the cage and look expectant at us!
Jenny
