Can someone please tell me how to correctly measure the noseweight of my caravan? I have a Milenco Nosewight Guage but when i weighed the noseweight of the caravan recently before towing home it read 120kgs! The limit on the car is 90kgs and the limit on the Al-Ko hitch is 100kgs, im not sure if it was me using it wrong (how wrong can you be with a weight guage) or if I really am over by 30kgs! The car and caravan sat level (very slight nose down) when hooked up and towed very steady.

HELP!

Needs to be checked with caravan level, on level ground. If your driveway ain't that, use a supermkt carpark. Noseweight gauges can be inaccurate, You can use bathroom scales with a thick piece of wood of correct length under hitch onto scales. to get weight down you need to be moving your gear backwards to over axle or just behind.

Im starting to think the caravan wasn't level and that caused the weight to read 120kgs especially when there is only one 6kg propane bottle in the front locker. It worried me all the way home not to mention nearly caused a argument with the other half!

I did the same with bathroom scales, the bit of wood from the scales into hitch was too short and got a scary reading.

We use the Milenco and manage to get our noseweight at or aorund 70Kg (max allowed is 75Kg for our car) everytime unless the pitch is sloping. Then I either move it to a level road or place some timber underneath the measure to level up the van.

Maybe packed the van differently? Maybe extra weight in the front locker e.g Two full gas cylinders instead of one that has just emptied and a full one?

moving stuff around in the caravan to get it right

Thats the name of the game! Don't try what the wife did ages ago...standing in the van moving stuff around and then shouting (whilst still in the van) "Now try it"

It is not only the amount of stuff you put in the front locker you have to worry about.

When we got our van I was amazed by all the storage under the front seats - so being a woman loaded them all up with the kitchen sink closely followed - only for the OH to explain that the van would be too heavy ( he had caravan experience - me none when we got together).

So I had to empty everything and move alot of my stuff to the rear of the caravan.  We now have it packed in such a way that we roughly know each time we take the van out what the weight will be - but as force of habit - we check the nose each time we travel, esp if we changed the awnings over etc;

Alot of people that i know don't even bother to check the nose weight - my father didn't bother either when he bought his van - we put our guage on his and found him to be towing over 100kg so we advised him what to do - so he now has a guage and has moved stuff around so that he is towing safer.

Happy caravanning !!

It amazes me just how few folks I see getting ready to leave a site who don't check their noseweight, tyres (Torque) and even lights!!!

Thanks for the help all, have now managed to get the noseweight to an acceptable 85kgs but still only one standard 6kg propane gas bottle in the front locker.
Have managed to get hold of one of the very illusive Calor Lite bottles so that should save me another 5kgs when I get round to swaping it.

Where we keep our caravan in the garden it's level front to back but slopes slightly from side to side. Would I need to use a ramp to get a correct noseweight measurement? It's a paved area.
