We had trouble with black algae (goo) in the flush reservoir, despite using the standard Thetford additive. But I sorted it - and ensured a fresh smell in the "en suite" - with a couple of glugs of Dettol liquid (the orange stuff that goes milky when you add water) in the reservoir as well whenever I refill it. We have no chrome, so Dettox spray (or supermarket equivalent) for cleaning surfaces works well for us.

Another source of smell (ref. the original post) may come from the sink - it took us several years to work out that the occasional damp patch on the carpet by the nearby cooker was due to the sink overflowing, as it was choked up with the previous owners' soap (or whatever). Unscrewing the sink and clearing out the drain was a fiddly job and not too pleasant, but it sorted any lingering smells and the sink now drains with a satisfyingly enthusiastic gurgle.
