Just got back from a great week at Linwater near Edinburgh (put review up) - brilliant weather - had a great time.

We have had our van about 18 months and not got an awning as didn't really think we needed one but are thinking more and more about getting one so can anyone advise us on what kind to look for?

We want a smallish one - not the full length of the van but enough to put a table and chairs in and if needed, sleep an extra person. On a budget so not looking at expensive ones.

Also do they fit all vans or do you have to measure the van and get one accordingly? and of course, next question - where on the van do you measure?

a porch awning is the easy way to go. easy to put up with an adult and a child assisting (hold pole pass section) should take no more that 15min to do. go for a secondhans Bradcott or simular rather than a light weight poly one as it will take more weather abuse and better made. plus they are to be had for very little. £100 will get a very good one. shame you are so far away I have a full one that would prob fit your unit.

Porch awning will fit any van. We are selling the above which is big enough to take a table and four chairs and four of us having a meal. Its a starcamp magnum 390. The 390 is the length in cms along the side of the van. Always useful to have somewhere dry to leave your wet boots. Behaved wonderfully well in a gale at Loosehill last September. I can understand what D Mansworth is saying but this particular model can take any "weather abuse."

The first time you put a porch awning up (well any awning really) it will take you some time but the more you do it the easier it gets. I put that above up on my own whilst the little lady sorts the inside of the van when we first arrive on site.

Porch awnings take up less space in the car so you can carry more gear. The above model weighs in at 19.2 Kg which is quite light for an awning. Weight is a very important consideration.

This type of awning is about £150 - £200 new

Phil

We can also vouch for the quality and reliabilty of Kampa awnings, we have a Kampa Rally 260. and its brilliantly easy to put up, will take a table and four chairs and still enough room to store all the bits and bobs like shoes and wet coats ect.

They also do an inner tent to fit this model, so sleeping an extra person would be no problem at all.

Does it fit any caravan?

I would say it is one of the easiest to put up.  After threading through the awning on to the awning rail, thread through and assemble as you go the big pole at the front,  You can then angle it and it should stay in position while you add the roof supports.  (Alternatively peg out the very front guy to keep up the large front pole while you put the roof poles in.

You can leave the sides and front zipped in, but we find it easier to zip them in once the main roof/pole structure is up.  I always take a small set of folding steps to reach the roof poles, which then doubles a place to keep the drinks:

In my opinion it is possible for one person to put up the awning, but safer if you have someone about just to hold a pole up.  I would say the same about all the other easy to errect lightweight awnings.  Even our Sunncamp Ultima 390 and Outdoor Revolution Spacelight was possible to be put up by one person, but in my opinion the Kampa Fiesta is easier.  It gets easier with practice though - the first time might not be an easy ride with any awning.  I have found the Kampa Fiesta the most stable of all the lightweights we have had.  We have sold on all our other lightweight awnings, but the Fiesta we have found to be by far the best lightweight, in our opinion.

Most lightweights/porch awnings will fir most vans, but it is always best to check.  You will need to measure from the ground up to the awning rail at its highest point and then check this with the awning spec.  (For a full awning the system is different)

There are two models of the Fiesta: the 350 (3.5 metres wide) and the 250 (2.5 metres wide) [- or is it a 270 at 2.7 metres wide?].  If you decide to go for one of these, you need to have at least 3.5 metres or 2.5 metres of straight awning rail at the highest point (depending on which model you go for.  They are available in Blue, Red and Green.

Whatever awning you decide upon, go and have a look at them in the flesh first (before you go to the internet and order the one with the best price).

The 350 and the 250 both come out from the van 2.5 metres.  We get bags of stuff in our Fiesta:

Room for the Cadac up the corner too.!!

I forgot to say, with the Kampa Fiesta you can also purchase extra sleeping compartments to zip on at one or both sides.  (You asked about sleeping an extra person in your original post.)   (See here for picture)

We have a similar porch awning to David's Kampa Fiesta. It is amazingly easy to put up (ours is an outdoor revolution techlite which has only one pole and can be left on the side of the caravan while travelling). I'd say it's definitely easy to put up on your own and plenty of space inside.
Unfortunately for us our teenagers are growing extremely quickly and son no longer wants to sleep in the caravan with us so we've just bought a bigger awning with a hanging sleeping compartment - still easy to put up, but unlike the techlite it needs 2 people.
