scary maybe but not getting it right first time is even more scary.....especially for the Bank account! The focus should not be on getting a caravan but on the right caravan.

Phil

Let's stop for a reality check.£400 will not get you a modern caravan with an alko stabiliser. Not wishing to be rude, please forget the idea of hitching a £400 caravan onto your car with a cornflake box number plate before towing up to 3 hours is at best naive. For this sum, anything you get is unlikely to be in a roadworthy condition. At best it will want tyres. Does your towbar also need to come out of this budget?
Unless you are prepared to do a lot of work and spend at least as much again on materials my advise is to stick with your tent until you can afford at least £1000 for a usable caravan. If you wait until autumn you should find some better buys too.

I am sorry to p!$$ on your dreams but it is better to be told than find out the hard way. Whether you take this advise is your choice, but it comes from someone who learnt the hard way several years ago.

Having mentioned the cost of not getting it right....here is something to ponder

Making your own number plate

First, the new plate must conform to the relevant regulations.

1. Typeface must be sans serif. All other fonts are prohibited. The one decorative variation still permitted is a 3D effect version of the mandatory typeface.

2. Each character must be 79mm high and 50mm wide (except the number 1 or the letter I). The width of each character stroke must be 14mm. There must be a space of 11mm between characters within the same group, and character groups must be 33mm apart. For the purposes of measurement, each character (again, excepting the number 1 or the letter I), regardless of its shape, is treated as a rectangular block of dimensions 79mm x 50mm

3. The colours and reflectivity of number plates must also comply with the regulations and accord with British Standard BS AU 145d. Your rear plate has to have black characters on a yellow background. …and it has to be the correct yellow

4. The plate must be marked with the British Standard Number; the name; trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier; the name and postcode of the supplying outlet.

Having made your own, the "Oh the real one dropped off Officer" is no defence. You can face a fine of up to £1000 for breach of the Regs but saved yourself £15 by making your own!!!!.

As the rather greatly named legsdownkettleon has indicated...there are no half measures.

Phil

Exactly the point I made earlier, Phil. The basic concept of "Going caravanning" is simple, but actually doing it and doing it safely and legally is a lot more complex and difficult. There's a lot to learn, it costs quite a bit of money and the consequences of getting it wrong are horrible to contemplate.

I expect someone will post soon saying something like "rubbish - just go for it! My caravan cost me two shillings and sixpence in 1953, I've never so much as pumped up a tyre, I don't bother with insurance and I've never had any problems...". Maybe at one time you could run a 'van like that, but equally at one time no-one thought it odd to load half a dozen kids into the back of a car without a seatbelt between them.

Times have changed and the days of making it up as you go along and trusting to luck are fading fast. In some ways that's a shame, but it's also reality.
