Having seen Vango's latest tent - an inflatable one - 'Infinity'(?). We were quite impressed with it - with the blow up bits seem to be quite sturdy.... and it does looks good!
Do people think that the concept come over to mainstream caravan awnings ?? Weight wise it does make sense.
I have found this website which does an inflatable caravan awning, it is by a firm which seems to be more geared towards industrial inflatable tents and they do look quite bouncy castle - ish! The look of their caravan awning doesnt quite do it for me! http://www.aireshelta.co.uk/the-aire-awning-3/
Karsten will do awnings for any caravan, it won't let me link to the webpage & its only on the Dutch language website. Main page here then put cursor on tent above 'Oppompbare(voor)tenten' & then click on 'Oppompbare caravan voortenten'.
I was told they like customer to take their caravan to Karsten factory to fit the awning.
Well it may not be the best looking awning in the world but to be honest most awnings look like Wendy houses & really aren't my cup of tea anyway.
An awning that's easy & quick to erect is brilliant and as long as it's stable then I'd buy one tomorrow - if I could afford it.... ah there's the snag !
Something that's inflated to to high pressure will be very rigid as long as it's been well designed so there's no reason why a well designed inflatable awning can't be as stable as a traditional one as far as I can see.
If ever they are available for a lot less money (in relative terms) I'll be dragging hubby to see one
Saw some inflatable awnings at the NEC show in Feb. The awning looked OK, wasn't any heavier than a normal awning and the manufacturer claimed it didn't need pegging or guying down (hmmmm...). However, the big downside for me was that you need a mains-powered air pump/compressor to blow it up. This is quite bulky and heavy, obviously needs a mains connection and will be noisy while in operation.
Vango's pump-up tents work with lightweight manual pumps, and go up in about 30 seconds, which seems more useful. It's an interesting technology, just needing proper design and development for caravanning application.

My son plays football.
The other week the team they were playing against had inflatable goals. A parent was forever running from one end to the other pumping the goals up. Don't know how old they were but do you want that every time you go away?
Ibflatable tents and awnings have been around for a long time particuarly in Holland. I have been told that the problem with them is extreme heat or cold and that they are prone tp bursting! I think I will stick to my good old fashioned poles and not have that worry or carry a compressor!
Well I certainly wouldn't be up for carrying a compressor & having to keep one running - but when I looked at the rest of their website it didn't seem to me that you needed to - did I miss something ?
ETA - my OH says you can get very small compressors, they're not all terribly noisy.. he reminded me it's a compressor that pumps up my Aerobed !
They don't need continuous inflation like bouncy castles, the tubes are thick rubber like inner tubes, they can be pumped up with any tyre pump, a track pump will do the job, it don't need an electric pump.
Its only Karsten that produce a really good long lasting inflable tent & I think the reason is that unless top quailty materials are used with first class workmanship & design, an inflatable tent is never really going to work.
Until you've had the chance to actually have a look at all the different onesavailable I can't imagine it's possible to say wheteher they're likely to be good or not.
if it was made in the same way as a bouncy castle then it will have internally stiched seems and need a blower to keep it up as it wont be air tight 9just like a bouncy castle. however if it was made with bouncy castle material but heat seemed then it would just need to be blown up.
however a good freind of mine does have an awning made from bouncy castle material that works the same way as any other awning (it doesnt need to be inflated)
