When you say an alko hitch, is it a pressed steel hitch or an alko stabiliser hitch? The stabiliser hitches are not to be greased at all whereas the pressed steel ones I usually grease the tow ball on the car and let it work it's own way into the hitch.

How do you find the caravan. We just bought a 2001 model which I picked up on Thursday. We're off on our first trip next weekend as I had to  swap all our bits and pieces over at the weekend.

OOps!

Missed a word out there - should have been caravan hitch damper.

We are really pleased with our caravan.  Searched long and hard for it and knew we would know the right one when we saw it.  It had everything we wanted and just felt right as soon as we saw it. We haven't found anything we don't like about it up to now. It's a little on the heavy side but as we tow with a VW SWB Transporter van its not a problem. The main consideration for us was a fixed bed and no damp. We've put new carpet in it and it's looking good.

Only been caravanning for a year and work commitments mean we can't get away as much as we would like but hubby probably retiring next year so we should get more use out of it.

Just checked on mine and sure enough it has no grease nipples...I shall sit back and see if anyone has an answer to this...

We looked at two last weekend, the Other was a Compass Magnum. The same layout and really liked it. When you looked closer though, there were a few little bits that needed attention. Any one of them wouldn't have put me off, but there were so many of them. The Pastiche was a year older, but looked much better looked after.

The weight difference was a big step for us, our old caravan was under 900kg but even though the new one has no stabiliser and is a bit longer, it feels much more settled on the road. I think this probably has a lot to do with the wheels being further apart than on the old one.

On older Coachman caravans that had the GRP cover over the draw bar, the two grease nipples were evident inside the top of the cowl. Since the cowl design has beeen changed to an Aluminium shroud you will most probably find that the grease nipples are on the under side. According to my caravan manual, the draw bar housing used to manufactured from cast iron but I believe that they are now manufactered from pressed steel and this may be just the reason why. If they are not visible at top or sides then they have to be underneath.

I couldn't see anything underneath either. I'll have a better look tomorrow.
