Hi everyone!

It's been a while since I've posted on here but we have got our caravan on a site and are using it lots - every weekend with the kids for the next three months we hope! It's been painted inside (B&Q Everywhere paint - we plan on running the caravan until she goes to Caravan Heaven so we are pimping her!) and new curtains.

The one thing that makes me genuinely miserable is the shower. It has some sort of fault which means using the shower is nigh on impossible. When using the taps, after a few seconds the water runs to nothing and we have to turn off the water and then restart it a few minutes later. The pump continues to run when the taps are off, and you can hear it judder away outside. It is very intermittent - when we first get to site and use it, it can be okay at first, but always starts conking uot at some point. Usually when you think it's safe to wash your hair...!

I don't like using the facilities on site very much even though they are as clean as they could be, I prefer to use our own shower. It's a girl thing I suppose.

The dealer is helpful and advised us to check the pressure, which my husband has done but it hasn't cured the problem. The dealer also said it could be air getting into the system in a split pipe. It has been a problem since we first went away in the caravan, which was a while after purchase.

It is making me so fed up that we are thinking of getting someone out onto the site to fix it for us. My husband is good with DIY stuff but with a 4 and 5 year old girls causing chaos around us, it's impossible to concentrate on any job! It will probably cost a fair bit for callout etc which makes me wonder whether it would be better if my husband could just fit a new shower. Patching up the old one could just mean it pops somewhere else, and if we bought the gear and went on our own one weekend, he could probably get it fitted.

We are on a tight budget as well as having our hands full most of the time. But I'm thinking the callout fee etc might cost more than my husband fitting a replacement shower..!

Anyway. If anyone has any advice on replacement showers, or what else we could try to get the thing working, or whether calling out a repair man might be something we regret...I would love to hear from you. I'm not sure what to do for the best!

Thanks in advance

Lucy x

Is the problem just on the one tap or is it on hot and cold? Do you have a plug in tap? These should stop when the taps are off. Sounds like either an air lock or a leak. Is the shower ok if all the other taps are off or do you get the problem with just the shower taps on?
Caravan water systems are much lower pressure than household systems. I would not expect a shower to work if there is another tap open in the van. The water will take the easiest route which is normally the lowest open tap.

It does happen when the bathroom basin mixer tap is on (which is also the shower tap, I'm not sure if all caravans run the shower from the basin mixer tap like ours?) and no other taps are running, and happens when hot or cold water is running through the mixer.

It also happens with the kitchen mixer tap when used on it's own with no other taps running. I've noticed it more when using the bathroom/shower tap though, I'm not sure whether that's because it's more of an inconvenience when the bathroom tap stops or it does actually conk more often iyswim? I sort of assume dthat it was using the bathroom mixer that send it skewhiff and stopped the kitchen one working, I may be wrong on that score.

We have a Whale pump which seems to be in working order. It will be old though. We changed the filter last year. When the shower has worked, it has been good, but that was only the once!   I guessed they'd be slower than household showers and I'm ok with that, it's the ff and on thing that's driving me crackers. If we could get that cracked I would LOVE our caravan. At the moment I have fallen out with it!

I'm not sure what you mean by plug in taps, I haven't had a good look at the workings. Nothing has been changed on it since it was built as far as I know, and so whatever is the oldest and cronkiest, that'll be what we have

Thanks for getting back. I love your screen name btw. I told my husband about that when we first started using the site and he says it to be every time we get to the caravan now!  x
