Quick advice from people who may have both - which is best for the beginner with a less-than-firm grasp on the caravanning plot and a new-to-them 1998 caravan - The Caravanning Handbook or the Caravan Manual.  The reviews on them both seem to say they're good for novices but perhaps the manual is more about maintenance and restoration whereas the handbook is day to day usage - would that be right?

We have the Caravan Manual it has the following chapters in it:

Intro and overview
Towing advice
Towcar preparation
Caravan chassis and running gear
Exterior body maintenance
Interior maintenance and improvements
12v supply system
Mains supply system
Water systems
Gas supply systems and appliances
Refrigerators
Improvements and repairs
Servicing and seasonal preparation

We've had it about 4 years now and have found it invaluable would definitely recommend it. It covers repairs and gives advice.

I have both manuals actually and you are right what you say that the caravan manual is more to do with maintanence. If you were going to purchase one of the two books I would recommend the Caravanning Handbook by John Wickersham. This book has information just about everything you need to know about caravanning.

Thank you both - I've ordered the Handbook from Amazon, then found an elderly copy of the Manual on GreenMetropolis and some money I'd forgotten about in my GreenMetropolis account so I have both of them :-)  Actually I suspect the Caravan Manual is about the same age as my caravan so that might actually work out quite nicely!

Just to update - the Handbook arrived this morning (Amazon Prime is a wonderful thing!) and it's incredibly informative.  I really should have bought it before i started the whole process of looking!
