I've seen 2 caravans on their sides in the past, both in strong wind conditions, both on a downhill slope. You can only assume it was due to a comination of going too fast and strong side winds. One was on the M62 bridge at Howden which is sometimes closed to highsided vehicles and caravans when windy,
I drove over there on Sunday evening in high wind, speed limit was down to 40mph but there were still people zooming along regardless. My large mpv is a heavy vehicle but I still got blown sideways a bit. A caravan in front of me was doing a bit of swaying but nothing too bad.

I'm the opposite to Jim, I would wait for the weather warnings to cease before I set out. Similarly, I'd be prepared to wait another day if it was dreadful if the weather said it would be better tomorrow when setting off or heading for home. I'm aware that I have that luxury as I don't have to fit anything around work though.
Only takes one bad gust of wind and that's it, my family are precious to me and I'd rather cancel than take even the remotest chance of an accident, I have seen first hand results of overturned car lorry accidents because of my old job it's not worth the risk IMO ,for the sake of maybe losing a day , it's easy to say take it slow and think it won't happen to me, unforunatley it can and does. When the rescue or police services say don't travel they don't just make it up.
That's just my opinion though each to their own.
were off to to wooler on friday and Im praying the wind dies down as kids have been looking forward to the week away for months.
Hubby is worried about the wind and says if its to windy we wont go its not worth the risk of writing caravan, car or even worse us off.
exactly my way of thinking we due to go to whitby on sat and if winds are as strong then we will be staying put i value our van, wife and daughter (and me) more than a week away you can always go later
