With toilet stops when travelling on ordinary roads (i.e. not motorways) there seem to be two main issues. The first one is the indication that a passenger needs the loo and is inevitably in a desperate state. The second issue is the stress put on the driver when he can't actually find said loo, or worse still, when there is a loo but nowhere to park with the van on the back. There are so many petrol stations these days without public loos. Better to use the van where possible.
We can do most journies in a single stretch ( wales etc ) if need be (if we are rushed for time )Hubby been a truck driver ,he is used to doing 4 -4.5 hrs in a row then having a break .Because of when I passed my test ,i cant tow so no good us taking it in turns ,but luckily towing doesnt seem to bother him anyway .

Unfortunately I think I have totally the wrong attitude for travelling. Start at A - Stop at B... which drives the Mehim Sahib nuts. Due of course to my service years of observing the British Army's Motto: Rush to Wait!
The consequence of which is now,I've pretty much sickened myself of driving. I do think those who advocate 2 hours at max are indeed correct.
Usually do 4-5 even 6 hour stretches at a time try to travel through night on long hauls ie
Fife to Gt Yarmouth last sept left midnight arrived 9:30am had 2 stops 460 miles
Can get 300 miles without refueling so try to get as far as possible
Plan route and know roughly what service areas are within that range
Fife to Torquay in june 500 miles hoping to do in 10 hours with stops
I tow at 60mph very stable outfit get 26-30 mpg towing
As i'm a Bus Driver Very used to long hours driving can be in the seat for 5and half hours a time and 10-12 hour shifts
never really on the road long enough to NEED breaks
with 4 kids in the car, their tiny bladders make sure we stop more than enough times to combat driver fatigue.
I don't mind, we're never in a hurry anyway when we got the van on the back....and sometimes you get to find some nice places when you take unscheduled stops.
It's funny but thinking about it I can easily drive 4 hours without van on back but 1-1.5 hours is max with van on, then I need a strong coffee! I have towed regularly for past 5 years but I am concentrating 100% when I am towing, which is tiring.
