One other consideration is peoples driving styles!! a lot of drivers are very heavy footed!! pedal to the metal and all that, my own style I have developed over 50+ years of driving!! has been to be very light footed on the acelerator it is amazing how far you can bring your foot of the acelerator and still keep a constant speed, also if you have cruise control fitted to your car use it, also check alll your tyre presure's regularly both on your Car and Outfit, and dont load your outfit with things you do not need as it is only extra weight, plan your route in advance and use good A roads as much as you can as you can use your cruise control better and less gear changing etc which all helps towards your fuel saving.
I myself pull a Large Twin axle Crusader Super Sirroco with my Mitzy L200 Animal 2.5 Diesel and the best that I have acheived was last weekend coming back from York to Sunderland was 28.9 mpg and I was in constant 4 wheel drive
I too always thought longer van + heavier, but my 2 berth swift is a lot heavier than my four berth.
Agree about driving styles, I get more mpg driving than OH does, but that's because I am female and we are better drivers

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.

Hi Woggle No cruise control on our towvehicle (L/Rover) but it's towed at between 50-56mph on A & good B roads. Tyre pressure etc always seen to before we set off. I'm a bit more inclined to get the speed up than my OH but I've not towed as yet ! Sounds like we approach things pretty much the same way as you, always plan out our routes with notes about turn offs etc jotted down.
My husband is trying to get me to ditch some of the stuff we don't need - but I still think we need it so it's staying !
Unfortunately we'll not be able to see what the true difference is between towing this van & the last one as we always forgot to keep proper notes to work out what mpg we got ! We've gone ahead I got the bigger 'van now though. We'll try to remember when we take it away on it's first trip.

Hi Murano ! Our Nessie (new caravan !) is a fair bit heavier than the last one. Last caravan as well as being 3 ft shorter was very basic inside though well built - better built than this newer one says my OH. Nessie is twin-axled with a galvanised chassis though so we're hoping she lasts a fair old while.
I have to admit my hubby gets more mpg than me - I do sometimes put my foot down a wee bit but never much above 60mph & never towing ! Good sentiment you have though, & of course, I agree
depends a lot on the tow car, my petrol shogun guzzled the juice at about the same rate whether it was empty or tugging a van.
not towed with the new diesel yet but am expecting much the same.
I think it would affect smaller cars more as they would be working harder.
Hi Hookup, that's interesting. We've gone ahead with getting a bigger 'van, so on our next trip we'll be towing an 18ft twin axle. It's about 1/2 a tonne heavier than our little 2 berth (3.8 metres) one.
Based on our average sort of journey around these parts my OH guesstimates we'll get about 4 miles less to the gallon. If it's very windy or we take some of the worse uphill routes of course it's going to be worse unfortunatlely .... Oh well, I think it's worth that bit extra money for the luxury of being able to have a bed left permanently set up as well as decent sized seating area & table. Just hope we can continue to afford it - pray the diesel doesn't go up too much more in the near future .... !
Don't know how much fuel is in your neck of the woods,Here OH pays 132.7 litre for unleaded and diesel costs me 134.7 litre. Drive 8 miles and it each type costs 6p a litre more!!!!
Sorry hookup - I missed this post of yours before. Here diesel is £1.40 a litre atm That's the cheapest in the area - when I say area I mean a within a 50 mile radius.
