ive recently bought a 1989 avondale leda cheviot the previous owner had said he had a damp repair to the whole front end but i noticed on the drivers side of the van the ply has bubbled from the insulation but the ply still feels hard could this be damp? also is it just a case of removing soft area ( about half a metre square) & drying out with a dehumidifier and then replacing with new ply?
If it's soft , it's damp that needs sorting , have a look at the Fixed it Club members websites to see how they went about their repairs . http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/favorites.htm
thanks had a look at those sites. it sounds as though i need to strip out all the rotten wood, dry out and replace everything thats rotten then reseal the outside?

Yep that's about it in a nut shell , it does take plenty of grafting , but stick at it , the rewards are well worth it . If you need advice ask away , there's quite a few Fixed it Club members on here that will offer advice . Pictures help a lot so if you can, post some on here or email them to me , and i'll post them for you .
thanks for the help, it's our first caravan so it's all new to me lol. as i say its only a small soft patch right at the front drivers side corner no more than a metre sq so im hoping it wont take too much removing fingers crossed. its the resealing im not looking forward to its quite daunting.
Don't give up you can do it :) our first van was a very very damp van and we did it , it was like a sponge all along the awning side at the front and the back ,, it's quite daunting and as you go you may get some shocks/surprises but don't despair , it can be done, and think how great you will feel knowing it's all done and you did it :)
One tip , once you have dried out the inside , replace any battens where required ( note you may need to remove awning rails to get some of the battens off because the screws that hold the awning rail on go into the battens ) , then reseal the outside . Now finally , when you are sure no water is getting in from the outside , you can re-board the inside .
Have a look around my site it should have most of the info there , and of course we'll always be about on here too .
thanks, going to strip some out tomorrow to see what tje damage is. just trying to find a cheap dehumidifier but not having much look lol. any sugestions to an alternative instead of a dehumidifier?
hi. i have a 1990 avondale leda cheviot. i had to reboard the whole of the front and half way down each side, luckily the timbers were still ok.
i got some new boards from o'leary motorhomes, which were a good match to the originals (abbey) i think was the pattern on the boards, they do mail order.
if you are thinking of reboarding using diy materials, then most of the boards in diy centres are 4mm thick, the originals are only 3mm, so harder to match up. if you need any further assistance just ask
got a dehumidifier on in there now, stripped off old ply & it looks like only half under the window & up the side of the window needs replacing the battens look ok think only 1 needs partly replacing. not as bad as i thought so far
think i spoke too soon lmao. the front driver side needs replacing from the middle of the window right to the front also the wooden window frame needs replacing, up the side and along the top of the front window need replacing too, as well as some of the front frame.
