You really should only sign the finance paperwork on the day that you collect the van. Dealers can deal with these agreements differently but stick to your guns. Use the law to give you the best possible protection. Many a consumer problem arises because buyers ignore the law and just glaze over when they see their new van/car etc and forget to protect their legal rights.
Under the Consumer Credit Act you will have a 14 day cooling off period where you sign the finance agreement in the presence of the lenders agent i.e the Dealer in the Dealer's office. Many dealers, for example, are agents of Black Horse . Within that time you can change your mind and end the deal. Now, if you sign that credit agreement when you pay the deposit, you still have that cooling off period, but the reality is that your eager anticipation of getting a new van will lead you not to consider using that 14 day option. By waiting until you pick the van up before considering using that 14 days period, then, if there is something wrong with the van within a 14 day period after collecting it, you still have to carry on paying the finance deal . That finance agreement is quite a separate contract to your purchase contract. So, by waiting until you pick the van up you have an extra string to your bow if you need to complain about anything.
In another way to use to that law to protect you, pay the deposit with your credit card and then if it all goes badly wrong and you get no joy with dealer or manufacturer (under their warranty) you can recover your money via the credit card company. Again, just giving you extra protection....all of which you will probably never need, but use the law to protect yourself anyway.
