We're hoping we'll soon be on the hunt for our next van. We already have the £9.99 B&Q damp meter & once we find a van we like we'll probably invest in an independant engineer's inspection. Is our damp meter up to the job or do we need a better one (the better we can test for ourselves the less likely we are to spend money on having duff vans inspected)? It doesn't give any numerical reading - just beeps faster & faster the more damp it finds (goes crazy if you put it to your forehead )
The problem with cheap damp meters is that you don't know if they are properly calibrated. Our cheap one let us down by indicating damp where there wasn't any. The repairer who had previously done a job on our van was seriously unimpressed when his work was called into question on the evidence of our cheapo meter.
The professionals use Protimeters, expensive but accurate and reliable.

Hmmm... Just had a look at the Protimeters - prices from £129 up to £549
Wondering whether to make do with our cheapie for initial viewings & when we find a van we like leave it to the engineer to check properly. Suppose we'd just have to take what ours says with a pinch of salt unless it goes mental in a corner...

Hi Al & Mel , what problems have you had with the meter .

Hi Wizard,
(re post #2 above)
Our meter was over reading by a huge amount compared to the repairers Protimeter. Where our meter showed mostly 0% damp but with one area in the red at 90%, the Protimeter showed readings of around 10% with peaks of 12%
I suppose it would be worse tho other way round - the meter showing bone dry when the 'van is riddled with damp, but I don't trust it now. As White Rose says, it doesn't cost too much to hire a Protimeter for a day and compared to the cost of a Caravan, and the time taken, inconvenience and cost of dealing with damp problems the Protimeter Mini starts to look like a bargain!
At the Caravan Hospital we believe in helping our customers keep their caravans healthy, and offer a FREE damp test in an effort to catch water ingress early on and save on expensive work later on. We use the tester shown, which allows us to monitor the onset of damp and catch it at the optimum moment.
Readings between (0-15%) no cause for concern
Readings between (15-20%) dealer to make a note of these readings and re-check at next service.
Readings between (20-24%) possible early signs of ingress, look for tangible evidence or ask for a re-check.
Readings between (25-30%) moisture evident, remedial work required; may not need stripdown unless surface damage (staining, pimpling, and softness) is apparent. (There is a risk of wallboard deterioration due to retained moisture in the structure if resealed only.)
Reading (31 % and above) structural damage is occurring, deterioration inevitable. a full stripdown of the affected area is required.

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
The picture Michael has posted is of the one i have , if you have a look on ebay you can sometimes pick them up cheap , paid £50 for mine , if you do buy one make sure you ask the seller if it comes with the accessory lead ( this is a pair of probe pins on the end of a lead ) , and calibration wire.
Thanks again for the information. Screwfix weren't much help so when we're ready we'll line up a weekend of viewings & hire a protimeter from HSS for a couple of days. Would rather spend £40 hiring a really good one than buying one we're not confident with.
After loosing money on a damp van I hired a Protimeter from a local hire shop a couple of times.
Our current 'van developed damp between it's first and second year services and had to repaired under warranty.
I decided that it wouldn't take many day's hire costs before it would add up to the cost of a Protimeter of my own. I googled and bought at the cheapest price I could find on the web. The Protimeter is the model used by caravan dealers and can, also, be used for damp testing in buildings.
I can know test my 'van more frequently than the annual test and I will be able to take early remedial action if necessary.
In my opinion cheap damp meters aren't worth having.
