check your LNB these are prone to not working properly.
if you have a phone with android apps you can download a programme where it shows you the satelites to aim for.
Silly question but do you have the reciever?
Also make sure there are no obstructions in your way like trees and other buildings.

Are you setting it up at home first to test? Should be easier enough to get a signal at home just put it close to your sky dish and allign it to match, when I have fitted new dishes I tend to put the sky box on signal strength (via the setup menu) and make sure I can see the TV from where I am and allign it using that as a guide, ( you get two strength bars one for quality and one for strength) never had much luck doing it with a sat finder meter.

a lot to read/

http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/

found after trial and error, make sure dish is vertical.point dish to dead south with a clear view of the sky.( NO OBSTRUTIONS AT ALL) turn dish really slowly in miniscule steps towards the east until you get to 140 to 145 on the compass.you should now have a good single and it only needs tweaking left or right to get the best signal bar.if you can not hold compass while turning use your watch.set 12 o clock to dead south and turn dish to 5 to 12.make sure all connections are good or you will be there all day.

It may sound daft , but with my satellite dish it actually seems like its pointing at the floor!

What make of dish and reciever is it.

I got one from Screwfix (Labgear) and was initially a nightmare to set up.

Then I realised the LNB needed power turning on through the reciever , once turned on its been no problem since.
You also need to check the angle of the LNB in relation to the dish, which varies depending where you are in the country

I have also used the dish with Sky box and that literally takes 2 minutes to set up.

As above get a compass, find south then move the dish slowly to the east.Once you get a signal , fine tune it by slight movements up, down and left and right and the quality should shoot up.

I bought cheap sat from aldi a couple of years ago and quickly learned the art of patience! Set up on roof of car(Magnetic) and as said before, use sat.dish on house to roughly align.Brill feeling when you get a signal for the 1st time.Every time since, only takes a few mins.Good luck.

Mine is a Ross Dish.

You may find that it needs to be slightly less than vertical to get a signal.
