After lurking for a while and getting as much info as poss I've now joined the touring caravan community.
I wanted a smallish caravan to sleep me, my wife and 4 year old daughter.
Also something not too difficult to tow as it's my first foray into it, and not too expensive.
If I really take to it then I'll probably go for something better down the line.
Anyway I'm now the owner of a 1995 ABI Sprinter 400D in very nice condition which I'm picking up Tuesday.
It has a full awning, aquaroll, waste, porta potti and most of the stuff to get us going.
I've just joined the Caravan Club and will get Green Flag Mayday cover.
I'll have to register it to me with CRiS and sort out some other bits and pieces.
I'm not sure what the state of play is regarding insurance. Is it likely to be expensive?
Are there usually any stipulations regarding storage sites. There is one near me with Caravan specific storage area, 24 hr cctv and gate keys/barrier card but is not Cassoa registered. Will this affect insurance at all?
I'm chomping at the bit to use the van. When I was a kid we had a converted ambulance that slept 5 of us and my Dad drove us all over Wales, Devon and Cornwall on various holidays and it was great. I was gutted when he sold it but we'd it for 4 years.
I want my daughter to have some great holiday memories just like her old man :)
Sorry about the long first post but I've never been one for short introductions.
Welcome to this crazy world!!! With regards to isnurance, there are a number of recommended insurers who will give discounts to CC members. I cant say for sure about different storages but, in my case, I moved from a Cassoa site to a non Casoa site and it didnt affect my insurance premium. I think its more a case of how secure the site is.

thanks for the reply. I've just arranged cover with e&l for £58 for the year which is cheaper than i anticipated. The wife is already looking at sites for our first mini jaunt to see how we get on.
For your first jaunt try to stay close to home - we found we had to nip home to fetch all the stuff we had forgotten! Welcome to the addictive world of caravanning - enjoy your van.
We are the same, caravan owners for 2 weeks now!! lots to learn an I have found the advice on here is excellent an everyone very friendly & helpful! we are going to do a couple of local weekends first before we go further in the summer. The kids are so excited an we are really loooking forward to some good family time away from the rat race!
The best move you ever made, in my humble opinion. I had my first weekend trip just over a month ago, and earlier today returned from my third. It's highly addictive this caravanning lark! Agree wholeheartedly with above comments (particularly the one above.... don't forget the beer...) and would just say.. enjoy it! Every trip so far I've returned with a shopping list of additional kit for next time, but in the early days I say that's all part of the fun!
Yeah I had to laugh about the post from Gareth72 about having to buy something extra after every trip. we have only been doing this a couple months but loving it.After our first trip we decided we had to buy a NEW VAN, had to keep stepping over our fat old dog, and the only space she could slleep at night was right up against bathroom door.BUT when we took it for part exchange found out it was riddled with damp. They always point out damp when you are trading in...never when u are buying!!! have fun
Thanks for the warm welcome.
I feel like a kid at Christmas.
I've downloaded the essential check list and have bought some of it today.
Beer does come very high on the list :)
The info I've got from this forum in the last few days alone would have taken me ages and many mistakes would have been made.
It's a great site with plenty of help given to the inexperienced like me. Many thanks.
PS. I repair televisions for a living (Plasma lcd and the like) if anyone needs any help/advice etc.. then feel free to get in touch.

There'll always be something new to buy Simon. We've been doing this for over 30 years and we're still buying stuff. Got a Cadac last summer, a windbreak with a canopy just over a week ago (one of the Netto specials) and I can't go into a camping shop without coming out with some new pegs for the awning. Our 20 year old awning drinks fridge () went to the tip a few years back (the lid broke off) and we need to replace it. I've always wanted a flag pole and fairy lights, but still not yet ventured that far yet. Thanks for the offer of help with the TV's - look out for the next 'Which TV shall I buy?' thread!!
This just has to be one of the friendliest places to visit on the internet.
Welcome to UKCS and caravanning. You'll love it! Have the flag pole and fairy lights although they need replacing this year. Nothing quite like the feeling of having a new to you caravan and spending as much time as possible in it! We've just been away for the weekend and off for 10 days next weekend and can't wait.
