It's nice to be important but its more important to be nice
We're off down the M5 at the end of July, the motorway will probably be full of caravans then! That is what puts me off going to the south west, we've not been for years! We usually go to France so haven't experienced UKs busy roads in the summer for some years!

We often travel M6/M5/M50 and have now started counting the caravans we see on route, I think the last count was 162 one way! Off this weekend to Pembrey so I dread to think what the count will be
Don`t forget , you will always see more going the other way because you are fairly static in your position and wont be passing a lot . Have a cuppa where you can see the motorway in both directions and you will see that you too are part of a broken up but large convoy from Easter to September . Having driven a slowish truck in this part of the world for a while , I can attest to the large numbers in both directions because so many passed me as well as came towards me . The motorways seem less congested this last few years and apart from the bottlenecks very close to Torquay on the A roads , the roads are coping well in East Devon . A lot of the sites close to Newton Abbot are close to major dual carriageways and do not suffer from congestion getting to them . If you are coming to the English Riviera , consider the Newton Abbot area . Just minutes from the Beaches or the Moors and if a city required close by , we are between Picturesque Exeter and Cosmopolitan Plymouth . I am convinced we offer more here than anywhere else in the South West .
With our tin tents just think of us like snails. Today its sunny and there are no snails to be seen in the garden. Come the rain and they are out in droves making a convoy across the lawn. With us its the sunshine and out we go in convoy across the motorways and byways.

Probably Brum ,more caravans per head of population there than anywhere else in UK . Boats too .I live in Devon nowadays and it is amazing how many Brummies are down here permanently , three of my immediate neighbours are Brummies
and so many of my old neighbours back home would love to join us . Go anywhere and the four top accents you hear will be Irish , Northern England , Midlands and Scots . Is there a story in this somewhere ?
On Sunday we travelled from Boroughbridge to Bury (about 70 miles) on the motorway and counted the caravans both coming the other way (a game to keep the kids busy) and those we overtook, we counted 110 caravans !!!
I heard there was a Range Rover rally in Porlock, but surely there weren't THAT many there We're off that way ourselves for the summer in less than 5 weeks, food and drinks on the ready for lots of tailbacks as usual but hey, that's the way of life going to Cornwall in the summer, we're well used to it by now
Gordano Services (Bristol) were chock a block with caravans and motor homes on Sunday lunch time. First time I have seen so many there at one time. Thank fully at least some were northwards bound and some soutward.
------------- Don't know where I'm going but will be happy when I get there.
The M5 is also known as "Caravan Alley" and we also play the count the caravan game. It often ends up with us in a convoy with as many as 10 vans following each other.
We have been travelling on the M5 during the peak holiday season for years now going down to Cornwall or Devon and it's always the same and yes, lots of the vanners are from Brum (we are originally from Birmingham). Many of the vans are actually going to the Weston Super Mare area (otherwise known as Brumigum by the Sea).
What surprised me was the number of caravans we saw on the M40/M42 today. We drove back from Bicester and passed quite a few. We weren't towing as our van is on a seasonal pitch but seemed to be quite a lot for a Tuesday lunchtime!.
I had the opposite conversation this afternoon. I seem, to recall that in the 80's you saw far more caravans on the road at weekends and bank holidays. You certainly see a lot more motorhomes now than there ever used to be.
we shall be joining the great convoy to the South West on Monday, CC Treamble Valley for a week,CC Crossways for 4 nights and return home via CCC Sherriff Hutton for the weekend. We normally take 7 hours altogether with short breaks for meals, just hope the weather stays fine.
