We're back looking at vans again and have seen a couple at a local dealer but they seem expensive to me. With our now returned van we paid the window price but got a new digital aerial, motor mover, 110 amp battery and gas bottle included. We didnt really try and wonder if we could have knocked more off.  On a 10k van how much do you reckon we can ask off?

Would be interested to hear what deals others have done on second hand vans.

I'd expect to get around 10% knocked off the window price, so in your example would probably start by offering around 8500.  Then once we'd arrived at around 9k, I'd suggest that they offered equipment to close the deal.  However, if I went with OH's mum or one of my aunties, I expect the dealer would probably give us the caravan for nothing, just to get away from their negotiating tactics :-)

It depends though, on how realistic the screen price is in the first place and what's already included - you need to have a look online to see what similar vans are fetching.  One of the dealerships we visited seems to have their vans so overpriced that it would take a reduction of around 20% to bring them in line with other dealerships.

with our first van we had battery ,awning ,gas bottle, hitchlock, wheel clamp ,toilet fluids, mirrors ,loo roll ,aqua roll , wastemaster..think that was it but we got enough stuff to get rolling straight away i think it worked out at £1000 worth of stuff   so would expect at least that off the window price oh and they knocked off an additional £400 off the window price

what you looking for ?
personally it doesnt hurt to make a silly offer and then work up til you both meet in the middle

It dosnt hurt to make a silly offer they can it say no, but you find this time of year it's a dealers heyday , they can sell vans all day long so are not to fussed if you walk away , but come the rain and snows then they are more inclined to be more flexible, the turnover at the caravan shop near us is astronomical right now, new vans come in and next week gone.

it dont matter if its a caravan or car i always haggle. i also think its better to bargain/haggle when you have cash. for example..

my 91 bessacarr cameo 390 sle dealer wanted £1,750 i got it for £1,000 1 owner from new.

my current car, renault scenic 2.0 2001 5k on the clock dealer wanted £7.995

i got it for £5.000 cash inside the boot and never used was the roof bars, and coolbox12v it only has 60.000 on the clock now.

a brand new conservatory, 3 x 4 mtr upvc i got it delivered for £1.500 cash.

just remember that the people you are dealing with wants to get rid.

the best time to buy a van/camper/tent is in the winter. when sales are very slow indeed. i also look in the free ads for bargains to, also a good place is preloved

Gregg, do you fancy haggling for us

I'm checking preloved and other free ad sites daily to see if anything suitable comes up. Do people haggle much with a private sale?

Haggle away with a private sale, it's almost expected, no body selling private knows they are going to get their asking price. So they almost allow for being knocked down.

Think I'd start at 15% off and expect to settle around 10%.  If it's a a dealer I expect they paid around7500-8000 for it if the person they bought it from also haggled quite hard. Plus maybe some kit for free or a trade price if you need any.

It's worth haggling for anything these days.  We got a new bed a while ago and got 10% off the price in the sale plus free delivery and disposal of the old one.

Generally I expect to get at least 12% of a new car, current car we got 7k off 35k and a few bits eg cheaper towbar, and previous one 6k off 31k.

You can always leave a number and walk away - leave them to stew a bit - mostly they don't like to see you leave a showroom (-of any type of goods).

I had too haggle hard for my current van. Although they wouldn't knock off any money from the van, I managed to get an extra £1500.00 for my part exchange and a 15 month warranty also. And if theres any problems with it they will pick it up and take it away for me to be repaired. They are coming in a few weeks for it to rectify some minor faults and fit a new status aerial.

Savanne1, if you want to learn how to haggle or even argue then pretend you are doing it for a good friend or family. it soon becomes second nature

also one to remember is there is more profit in seconhand vans for a dealer than new ones, so on a £10k van i would be looking at £8k +extras

crikey gregg, I dont think I'd dare try to get that off. A van we are really interested in is on at £9545, we would want a mover fitting. We thought of offering 9k to include a new mover, perhaps we should start at around £8.5K instead.

savanne1, tell the guy you will give him/her £8k cash ( pound notes ) and want a mover thrown in. but dont give them the impression that you have set your heart on it.

i speak to the mrs and say,,, i prefer the other two we saw yesterday. ( making sure the dealer can just hear what you said.) lol. if you get no joy then walk away,, i will  bet he/she will soon call you back
