Hi

The policies on both our cars were due for renewal next month. Both were insured with Saga, Comprehensive with Social, Domestic and Pleasure and Business Class 1 (needed for our work). The Saga renewals came in at c£1150. I tried various comparison sites and looked in "Which?" magazine.

I discovered that if I joined CSMA, for a £16 annual fee, I could get discounts with LV/Frizzel, which was in 3rd Place in the "Which?" "Recommended car insurance providers". Saga was in 7th place! I joined CSMA online, on the strength of temporay employment in the Job Centre during the summer of 1978!!!

I then used the link to Frizzle insurance from the CSMA website to get online quotes. I had to phone up to query some details of the online quotes but was given the online discount when I phoned and subsequently purchased the policies over the phone. When I purchased the first, cheaper, policy from LV, this then entitled me to a further discount, as a policy holder with LV, when I purchased the policy for the second car.

These LV policy premiums enabled me to make total saving of just over £250/21%+ on the comparable renewal premiums with Saga. In addition I have the additional benefits/discounts of CSMA membership. The only disadvantage was that Saga allowed me to pay the premiums in quarterly installments without additional interest charges but then I saved almost the equivelant of one of those installments!!

I hope this information may help others to get cheaper car insurance.

I hope this information may help others to get cheaper car insurance.

I was also with Saga and premium increased by £320.I am an HGV driver with no accidents in 30 years.I phoned Saga to ask what they were playing at with the new quote. This is the best deal we can get you with the companies that we use they said.Looked around on line and opted for Aviva, although this had pay for 10 months get 12 months cover as an introduction,it was still £300 cheaper than Saga.

I have also just saved £219 on my buildings/contents insurance.Switched from

Direct line to Legal & General

My tip for everyone is stop being loyal, shop around and get switching.Check online first and then ring the freephone numbers.

You know it makes sense loyalty counts for nothing now with big business.

My car insurance is with Saga and I was shocked to see how much it had risen in February. I tried 'Confused.com' and got several lower quotes so I rang Saga to say I was thinking of changing. They were very quick to say send them proof of the quotes and they came back to me to say they would match the lowest. I saved loads.

The problem with Saga is that once your on their books for something they are never off your back.

If they worked out the cost of the mail they have sent me they could have knocked at least £200 off the price for starters.

My last post of a few days ago regards diesel chipping (which I list below)highlights LV, they are at the moment very competitive and you do not need to be a member of any special group to get a good deal.

Wizard is correct most insurance companies will not quote
for a car where any modification has been made as it would need a underwriter to be involved.
LV Insurance accept most modifications without loading premiums and are competitive."

Maybe worth a look at LV for anybody in this situation.

Cheers.

It seems like lots of others I had a massive renewal hike with SAGA after the first year. I changed to John Lewis Insurance for about the same price as the original SAGA premium. One advantage of SAGA was the 365 days out of the UK cover.

My Jeep was up for renewal last week.  Existing insurer quoted £1200, l£450 last year!!  Phoned them and it was reduced to £900.  Went on the price comparison sites and got it for £539.  What is that about?!  Loyalty does not pay.

Caravan insurance due next!  We got our second hand van last year and paid a bit extra to get new for old. I hate spending the time searching but it's worth it.

Yes I like Saga for their yr round continental cover. At renewal time I shop around for lowest quote & Saga have always price matched. Same with my house cover with them as well.

Ins companies always load renewal quotes in the hope you will renew without shopping around. Those that don't shop around subsidise those that do.

I too have been with Frizzel/LV in the past but have changed insurers a few times over the years when they have "hiked-up" the renewal premiums. I wanted to get a "Which?" mag recommended one as to achieve that they have to have both a good customer service score and a high-scoring policy - cheap prices aren't much use if the policy or service is poor.

I didn't bother to ask Saga to match the cheaper policies this year. Last year when I tried this they "split hairs" about minor details of the alternative cover to argue that the lower quotes WEREN'T comparable.

As well as saving on the legal assistance, free from LV via CSMA I, was, also, able to not pay for Continental cover on our second car which is never likely to leave the UK. For our towcar LV's 180 days is, unfortunately, plenty for us - I'll have to rethink when we reach retirement!!!
