Hi

Into our second season of vanning now and working through a list of wants and needs. Top of the list this month is sorting the TV out. We have a freeview TV and need an aerial.

Ive kind of got my eye on these two and wondered if anyone else has any advice or other suggestions

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com/product/Compact_High_Gain_UHF_TV_Aerial

seems to have good reviews but is messy looking!

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com/product/Image_530182_VHFUHFFM_Caravan_Aerial

looks neater but will it be any good.

Thanks in advance

We have found the status 530 excellent but you need to drill a hole in roof and they are not cheap

We had the second one at one point and it was quite good but, it does not matter what ariel you have if, something is blocking the signal like trees or hills or if the signal is weak.A tv booster which can be bought from argos is a great help and i think sat is the way to go.

The status on our van is a waste of space on our regular ite, we've got a Vision plus ariel & it's brilliant. As our current van has nowhere to fix it, I simply mount it on a longer pole & cable tie it to the jockey wheel. It gives us excellent TV. Someone did post a photo of it on here in a similar thread to this. If you do a search you may find it.

Cheers Jeff, it's the one we have too.  That'll teach me to open the links, brilliant ariel though. We've got a directional one on our van now & the vision plus is better than that on our site.

I find the aerial on the van to be ok most of the time, but for areas where it's not (I try it first), I have a VisionPlus stowed in the van as a back-up, one of these here. This can be easily pole mounted off the jockey wheel.

You can either simply fling the cable through a window or other inlet, however I fitted an external aerial socket which I ran back to the Status amplifier that powers the existing aerial, and is already in the van.

If you have the later type Status amplifier already, these are compatible with the VisionPlus aerials, so no need for additional boosters etc. Also feeding back through the amplifier, the signal is then passed thru the existing wiring in the van which keeps things neat.

We'e not big TV watchers while we're away, but have always found our already fitted status arial absolutely fine for digital TV.  It's a little like the second link in the original post, but slightly shorter and without the blades.  On the odd occasion when we can't get a signal, we just pop in a DVD into the slot at the side of the TV.  It does for us.

I bought one like this almost thirty years ago; from Cornwall to Linlithgow it's served me and is still serving me perfectly well - but I think I might have paid a quid or two more back then .....

I use a household high gain aerial for £17.00 off eBay , a two piece pole from Screwfix to mount in a jockey wheel bracket and get excellent picture from any site that has marginal reception or better . I know it doesn`t look sleek , but it is really effective , certainly more chances of a picture than the built in aerials that I have had in the past .   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TV-Aerial-Kit-Superior-52-Element-Freeview-Digital-/390222189017?pt=UK_ConElec_TVAerials_RL&hash=item5adb0e11d9#ht_2967wt_1139
You may find it at a cheaper price but this is the same one .

Thanks guys

were not really massive tv watchers when we're away but I do like it on in the morning or when I'm pottering around tidying up!

Think we're gonna go for the vision plus one and if that fails we give up!!

Hi mrshorsy, I've run a few comparisons on ariels generally, and allthough not pretty, the household type at least matches everything else available.  If not better than most or all for picture quality.  A buddy of mine put up the second of your choices on a mast, whilst I use something similar to your first.  Our vans were pitched next to each other.  The standard type ariel I put up performed better.

Type one is cheaper, works better, but doesn't look as good.

All the best

Tony

I know sky would be easier but I reallly DONT want ky in the van. For me the whole point of vanning is to drag the hubby and kids away from all the channels!!
