When you say rear do you mean on the rear of the caravan or rear of the car. We use a Witter tow bar mounted bike rack but then we have a car with a high nose weight allowance. Two lightweight bikes will add about 30 kilos to the weight at the rear.

We have a Fiamma bike rack fitted to the back of our Swift made Abbey caravan and have travelled to Spain and back without any problems.

As far as I know Swift are the only manufacturer who build in fixings into the back panel to take a bike rack although I have seen them on other vans.

Best place by far to have them if you are travelling a good distance

We also have a Witter cycle rack on which we carry two adult bikes.The bikes and rack weigh 32 kilo so I have to balance nose weight of the caravan accordingly.We have towed to Portugal and back without  any problems. I have the loading and unloading off to a fine art now and can do it in 3 or 4 minutes. To protect the bikes from scratching each other I use four pieces of pipe insulation each about 15" long on the forks etc.I also twist the handlebars to 90 degrees so the two bikes nest together better.The big advantage is that you can use the rack easily (with a lighting board) when settled on a site to get around to start a cycle ride from another place.

We used to have a roof rack but found this a pain in the "proverbial " loading and unloading plus wind resistance when towing on long journeys.
