phil76 at last someone who is offering a sensible answer to a problem I orignally asked raher than discuss the morality of having music/radio in the awning. There are a mass of wires at the back of the radio trying to find which are the correct ones. Then I have the problem of getting the cable from high level into the front locker. That is assuming that it is legal (risk of fire/Electrical in gas locker). So keep the sensible answers coming please. Just to reiterate, portable radio difficult to get decent signal, same for ipod on radio. Radio on in van and open window tried this not very good. Earphones not practical. Wireless speakers don't know how they would work.

Adding extra speakers to your existing system is possible, how would depend on:
The make of radio/cd player
How many speakers the current system has
The current wiring of the system
If all you are seeing behind your radio is a mass of wires then the actual work involved may not be for you. Perhaps a visit to a car audio shop may get you the answers you are looking for and more importantly someone that knows how to do it and what they are doing.
I'd suggest an auto switchable socket(s) - this means that when the extra speakers are unplugged the system reverts to the original wiring (very important) - have the socket(s) mounted in a position, inside the caravan that suits plugging in and running the wires through an awning-side window.
If installed correctly use of the radio's fader control should balance the volume between the awning and the van

Hi Rune. Its a Sony Cd/Radio factory fitted at the front offside locker with 2 speakers at the front. From memory there are quite a few wires at the back for at least 2 more speakers. If I knew which wire were which it would be simple to add a couple of speaker sockets. I do not have a clue what a auto switchable socket is.

if you google for ISO car radio, it will give you the pin out of the connector on the rear of the radio, which as its sony, and providing its less than 10 years old will have the correct colours for you as well.
I have installed a speaker just by the door so I can hear in the awning, the other speaker connections are taken up with a stereo pair in the front of the van and a small passive sub in the bottom of the wardrobe.
when you look at the plug at the rar it should (possibly) have 2 plugs 1 will have wires for live and neg electric ariel and possible remote ( red, black, yellow, green) on the second plug it shoud have 8 wires those are speaker wires some stereos have the wireing diagram printed on top so removing stereo may help
when i added speaker to rear of caravan i ran them through tops of cubards and used self adesive ties to hold wires up out of the way then ran out through an air vent and underneath van.
