just been looking throu some old posts on here about chargers, omg im well confused, saying that ordinary chargers dont charge leisure batteries fullyect ect ??
I read something years ago that it wasnt advisable to use a car battery charger as the amps are higher and it charges to quickly and over time would wrap the plates in a leisure battery,?
Jeff is quite right and the reason is because a leisure battery is a deep cycle battery whereas a car battery is a shallow cycle battery. In technical terms, both batteries are designed different in the fact that the deep cycle battery has more but thinner plates and the shallow cycle battery has less plates but thicker. Therefore, the performance of each battery is different in the fact that a deep cycle battery will hold more power of a longer period (which is what is required for caravanning) and a shallow cycle battery will boost instantly (which is what you need to start an engine in the car). Therefore a car battery requires more amps to charge it so if you use a car battery charger to charge a leisure battery, the power is too fierce so the acid gets hot which leads to the thinner plates being eventually buckled. When they buckle and the plates eventually touch, you have a short circuit and this is when the battery fails to hold a charge. The conclusion is, you can't use a car battery charger to charge a leisure battery so you need one that slowly trickle charges with less amps. The link below shows what charger I use and it charges in 3 stages which is designed specially for leisure batteries.
so will this one work ok thx guys

That say it is suitable for batteries of a maximum of 50 aH. Most leisure batteries are 85 or 110 aH so unless you have a particularly small leisure battery then this is not suitable.
It sounds like you are a bit unsure as to what charger to buy. You need one that is no more than 3 amps charge rate but no less than 1.5 amps either. Anything less than 1.5 amps will take at least two weeks to fully re-charge to full capacity if you have used it on the caravan for several days without any re-charge facility such as a solar panel or generator etc.
Reference to item No. 400172007991 it doesn't state very much about the charger at all apart from the fact that it's charge current is 4 amps which is still a bit high. It doesn't state either whether it can be left on indefinately as it may not have an overload facility built in, that's why it's cheap. You need to look for one designed specially for leisure batteries that can be left on 24/7 with a cut out facility so it doesn't over charge and cook the battery. I showed you the link as to what I use so you need to be looking on the same lines even if it's a different make. Some people on here call them a smart charger and it's these good people on here that prompted me to buy one. I haven't been disapointed in the slightest.
