A very unpleasant experience indeed! its possible they had already come to steal your caravan and knocked on the door to make sure you were out.
I think I would follow David's advice and keep a vehicle parked on the drive to secure it, I can see his logic of how they could launder the (probably stolen) Hobby caravan.
I had exactly the same experiance,& knowing that wheel clamps ect were no deterent to a determined thief. I bought one of these http://www.jsbhublock.co.uk/3.html for when the van is stored at home . I know the wheel has to be taken off to fit it,but there is no way they will get it off in a hurry
and No wheel bolt removal tools will not get it off as they will not fit in the bolt holes or to the depth of the locking nut

the answer to the question is Yes, three times in 2 weeks but not for caravans, mainly for any items of value.
white vans, they knock on the door if on one answers help themselves to all they can find police have shown almost no interest apart from logging your call
watched them do it from my garden have all the info still no interest from police
What about a homemade security device. Only practical if you are not using the van for a time. Tin cans tied to the centre of the van right underneath in the middle. If it was dark, after they had managed to get the wheel lock and hitch lock off, they would hardly notice tin cans until they moved off. Then there is a good chance everyone in the neighbourhood would know what is going on. When they noticed they would have to stop, crawl underneath and cut the things off - attach with razor wire for maximum effect. By the time they had done it you might have caught up with them. Alternatively, if they decide to carry on (on honeymoon), it will serve as a come and get me signal for the police. Perhaps I should patent it??
Like the idea regards tin cans but not sure would actually like to catch up to them, they are probably very mean people with no sense of humor and likely to respond with violence!!
I am not sure that today the police would have the capacity to stop a caravan theft taking place but I am sure the call would be well logged.

I know what you mean about not wanting to catch up with them.
We bought our first caravan last year, a 1999 model so not all shiney and new and within 2 weeks of having it, a random man knocked on the door asking if it was for sale. I of course said no and went in to total paranoia thinking it would be taken, It wasn't. We have another one now a 2006 model, bought last aug and only saturday did we get another knock at the door from a woman in her transit pickup asking the same question, we live on a busy ish road with a bus stop outside, opposite a health centre....so alwayas a lot going on. getting a 8 m twin axel through our victorian pillared gate is a precisie, to the inch, moving nightmare....and if they can manage to get off all its security.get it through the gap without trashing the caravan & brick pillars...without causing a major traffic jam with the buses..in quick time without my neighbours noticing...they can have it! and I would congratulate them. It's just the world we live in....shame.
we had a van stolen from our village a couple of weeks ago during the night, earlier in the day the homeowner had a bloke at the front door asking about a dog that wonders around the green at the front of the houses, police seem to think that was when others were around the back garden checking out the van security for later on? van was only a couple of years old. you were right to keep the police informed. I put more chains on mine into a massive concreted in ground anchor.
DSB, be aware upwards of 30 traveller vans moved onto Grendon rec at tea time last night, and I dont think there just staying overnight!! Here's hoping there nice travellers!!

Oh No! My last van was stolen from Wood End. We are now on a much more secure storeage site - Gold Cassoa, in Tamworth - aka known on here as Fort Knox or Alcatraz. Hope we'll be OK. I think I'll be going to check daily - if they get into Fort Knox, goodness help all of us!!
