We are currently looking at our 1st caravan and welcome any suggestions from members based on the following restrictions:

1 - Car weight of 1456kg (56 plate Vectra 1.9 CDTI 150 bhp)

2 - Shower to be in a seperate cubicle and not over the toilet / basin

3 - Layout needs to be a min of 1 double for us and 2 children singles - one for a toddler and one for a baby in small travel cot. Bunks are not what the OH wants as the toddler isn't big enough (and won't be for a few years) for the top bunk and we wouldn't put a cot that high!

4 - New or something upto 5/6 yrs old

The only thing we can find at the moment is the bailey orion 440 as this has a middle double we could use and then 2 x 5ft singles at the front plus an end bathroom with shower cubicle.

Any ideas of other models as I am struggling

Darren

If you bought new and were planning on keeping the caravan for a few years then a triple bunk such as ours but lighter might be a decent option.  The toddler could sleep on the bottom bunk and you would need to check the width but you may be able to put the cot where the rear dinette table is - you stow away the table and put the cot into the space between the two seats?  My son was 3 when he went into the middle bunk with an added bedguard and my daughter just turned 6 when she went into the top bunk but she would've been ok up there a year earlier as the bedguard is pretty tall up there.  At least this way you could maybe grow into the layout.

Thanks Fiona, we had looked at the Orion in this layout but the OH prefers the shower to be seperate and we can't find one with a middle bathroom / seperate shower that is within our weight! We can't really afford to change the car as well so are a bit limited in choice at the moment due to the weight issue. I am happy to go just over 85% if needed but not by much as this is our first van and we want it to be as stable as possible when towing!

The Orion does look nice & it's really light.

What kind of sites will you be using?  If you're using sites with facilities (showers) you may well find them easier to use than your own shower - much bigger cubicles.  But if you're planning to use CL/CS sites then you may well need the sep shower.

We did have a van with a shower cubicle but all we ever used it for was storing the laundry bin.  We've always used site facilities.

Hi Vanessa, initially we will use the caravan club sites till we find our feet but like the idea of using the quiet CL sites to escape the rat race at weekends, hence having a decent shower is key to the OH

I have to say we do use our shower, its so much easier with young children to just shower them down in the caravan as it only takes a couple of minutes to do rather than do battle with them in the showerblock.  If we are on a multi service pitch then I will also use the caravan shower, OH prefers the site showers.  A separate shower was essential to us but there aren't many in the lighter vans as the bathrooms seem to be tiny.  It might be worth hanging on a month or two and see what is coming through for 2012

Hi Fiona, Yes thats just what we were thinking. Bailey have some new models coming out for the October NEC show which are meant to be lighter with the new construction methods they are using. As its only 3 months away its probably worth waiting, although it will mean we would miss out this summer. The local dealer has a new Orion due in next month but as tempted as I am I think its best to wait and see what comes out at the show.........plus buying in the winter I might be able to drive a better deal
