I can not advise you where to put it but i can advise you not to light it in the awning as it would be a fire hazzard.

It does not matter where you put it as long as you can get at the existing pipe to make a good connection and also somewhere where a hole in the van wall will not be a problem. What you should consider is where you are going to sit drinking your beer while your steak is burning. If you are going to sit with the barbeque just outside the awning then you will need a 3m length of hose stright out from the van. Be aware that some suppliers will only sell you a 1m length though.

I use a separate small gas bottle and then I can sit where I like.

I thought that one was not supposed to use a flexible [rubber] gas hose more than one metre long, as why some suppliers will only sell in one metre lengths as Mike says above. I have seen longer lengths in use on quite a lot of sites.

I've done a bit of a search but cannot find any regulation which says you cannot use a longer length than 1m. I  use a 3m hose without any problem.

If anyone knows if a regulation exists then I would like to know about it.  I would still use a 3m length anyway though.

Wow now there's a question like how long is a piece of string. Put 2 in one at the front and one at the back would be the optimum answer. Ours is in the locker at the front of the van (in the awning) We have two options a 3 mtr hose or move the bbq away and take the gas bottle with it. TBH this all depends on what site we are on. Sometimes round the back of the van could be more sheltered so the lot moves. Sometimes it dry and sunny so it goes out front.

We had no problem last week when we bought 3mtrs of hose. We even told them it was for a gas BBQ

I'm sure i've read in my Cadac instructions not to use more than 2m of hose, not sure why though?

We never used ours we just used to put the gas bottle near the bbq, with 4 dogs it was safer not to have the pipe trailing but I suppose if I was going to fit one I'd have it near the front of the van so that if it rains, gets breezy or chilly you could unzip the fron panel of your awning & sit under shelter while still being near your bbq.

I now have two calor lite bottles.  One stays 'connected to the van' and the other one comes out and stays connected to the Cadac.  I can then put the Cadac where I want according to the direction of the wind.  Gas bottle is right next to Cadac so no trip hazard.  We don't have a BBQ point and don't think I would use one, to be honest.  Very happy with my system.

I think the length of hose advice is to do with the amount of gas that could remain in the hose and the hazard that could cause. Our local caravan place wouldn't sell anything longer than a 2 metre lengths and they said that they were not allowed to sell it in longer lengths even if you say that its NOT for a gas BBQ.

In France there were many campers with some very long lengths of hose.

Had an external point fitted recently, just by front locker near awning rail (when full awning up it just feed though )  My connection from regulator to outlet is metal pipe.  When divueging this info to insurers as a modification they were ok with it as it had been profesionally fitted.

In my previous van it was on the side at the top end (inside awning). Had no problem getting 2m hose to run outside awning to the front.

In my current caravan it is in the front right gas locker fixed to the floor to the right of gas bottle. Not used it yet as OH has said she prefers "real" charcoal BBQ's so now carry a portable one of those and bag of charcoal!
