There are two sets of pads in the head that grip the towball when the lever is lowered, this provides hte anti-snake functionality.
The towball needs to be clean of any grease or paint to stop the pads getting contaminated. I given them an occasional clean with break cleaning spray. The indicator in the middle should show green not red when hitched up, if not sign of front\back pads needing changing. There are two indicators on hte side for the other pads, lever should "bite" when between these. If not a sign to change. Set of four pads and installation notes available from Al-ko, dealers, or on-line (eBay etc.)
