I just use Ecover washing up liquid & water - it doesn't work like but that's what I use   Seruiously,  it cleans `normal' much just fine but there are one or 2 marks I've not been able to shift, so I'll keep an eye on your thread myself for all the tips that come in - then pick the cheapest one .

There are any number of caravan cleaners and polishes. Go to an accessory shop and have a browse. But don't use any kind of washing up liquid. Seriously!

Hi allycath1, I have used silky to remove any stubborn marks, let dry to haze then buff it to a shine, then coat with extra gloss protection, from the auto glym range, it brings up the dull fibreglass to almost new, my van is a 1998, so pretty dull front. I have just used jeff’s favourite product showroom shine, but cant say how long shine will last, (jury still out on that, only tried it out yesterday).

Jeff , Next door neighbour commented on van to-day said it looked like a new van, and asked me what I had used on it, and where could he get it. Might be a bit reserved in my opinion of it, as it seams to have done better job than I thought.

I use some washing powder diluted in hot water.  It makes a great job.  I also use it for black streaks and the plastic trims of the vents and lockers.

Also good for the alloy wheels of cars stained with brake dust.

Best thing - it's very cheap!  Never done any harm.  Jif or CIF also cleans streaks.

Washing up liquid has a lot of salt in it, which will scratch the surface. It's just not designed for cleaning vehicles- it'll strip off any wax which is there to protect the surface, and generally do more harm than good. Some people seem to think that specialist cleaning products are some kind of con - they aren't. Cars and caravans are not pots and pans! They have all kinds of seals and materials - inside and out - that can be chemically damaged over time by using the wrong kind of cleaner.

Read this.

personally i use any kind of cleaning agent, to clean the old tin tent, apart from washing up liquids and soap powder's, if it'll clean the cr*p off the the jallopy, it'll clean the tin tent, some say they do this and that better but if you ask me i think  they're all much of a muchness, just the price that varie's

Cheers for the info - & sorry....  I did google & found quite a few different websites & forums saying exactly what you've posted here in reply,  & I meant to come back & say so but forgot !

I had been using Ecover,  assuming that because it's knder to the environment it would be kind to my caravan too..... maybe it doesn't have sodium in it I'm really not sure (not looked at bottle yet) but at any rate it's still a detergent, so probably not a good idea for the caravan after all.

I'm going to stop abusing caravans now though honest !    Shall be buying something like Autoglym or Silky I think.

My battery box plastic had gone kind of yellow colour. A good scrub with caravan cleaner did no good so I tried car brake cleaner. It worked! Not back to original white but very near it. I just sprayed in on a rag and rubbed it on. No effect on the plastic.
You can buy it in aerosols but I scrounged a jar full from a local garage. It also removes sticky stuff and ugly sealer residue from caravan joints.

Washing up liquid is a de-greaser and will remove almost all traces of protective polish.
as in LA LAs post above
