hi been to my local dealer today to exchange my 7kg butane gas bottle, for a 6kg propane ,and were told that we can now only exchange like for like ie blue for blue ,red for red,but i may be able to exchange in the winter ....,according to the calor website i can exchange a 7kg blue for a 6 kg red or a calor lite, phoned another dealer localy to us and they said no problem but they had no stock, after that i phoned another 3 suppliers and we told we can`t exchange our bottle for another type as instructed by calor as there is a shortage of propane bottles ,i can understand a shortage in the winter as it is more commonly used in colder months but not in summer.has anyone else had this experience recently.

I was told by a supplier that its very mixed up and that even the helpline at calor do not know what advice to give but yes you can exchange for a different bottle BUT thats no good knowing that if the suppliers dont know and calor so disorganised they are not giving the correct advice

Why does anyone bother to switch between Butane and Propane? We have been operating permanently on Propane for at least 10 years. Propane is better for all weather camping, so what's the benefit of switching to butane for the warmer months?
I imagine that the OP, and indeed many others, are wanting to change to propane so that they can stay on propane all year round, the problem is that I imagine many want to do exactly the same, which leads to a shortage of propane bottles at the dealers unless you are prepared to pay calors initial hire fees. I sourced a butane bottle from the local reycling centre ( they had no propane ones ) and went to 5 retailers before I could get it changed to a red one. It was much the same story each time, " dont care what calor says, our boss says like for like only "

Bertie.
Because of its higher heat value and it is a bit cheaper, heat for heat.
That said I don't bother now to change as I long ago "dumped" Calor and use a commercial trade outlet for Flo-gas Propane at a much better price. Have retained a Calor-lite for when in France but using it is a pocket painful experience.

And of course if you want to use lightweight cylinders you only have the choice of Propane! We have also been using Propane for some years now and have not really noticed any difference between the two.
according to the calor site, there are 2 catagories of bottles, and you can swap within the catagories as much as you like, the first is the 7Kg butane, the 6kg propane, and the calorlight.
Then there is everything else.
ive just been to the calor dealer and changed a 4.5kg butane for a calorlite the man in the shop told me i could exchange any size bottle for calorlite

some will, but if you look here calors official line is as I said before, some dealers will change others for you, at their discretion, I do with one of my bottles in the winter, goes from a 7kg to a 47kg for a space heater.
I do not use suppliers as most will only change like for like as the bottles have to match there stock sheets. Which is why some people find they cannot change size or colour of bottle.
You will have much better service if you go to an actual calor site. Most big towns have one. I know it is not much use if you live miles away from one My nearest one is in Swindon 13miles away.
I exchanged a red propane 3kg bottle for a blue propane 7kg bottle no problems and cheaper for a refill than local suppliers.
it must be a midlands thing tried again today,no luck like for like only unless i want to take out a new contract then no supply problem ,it seems dealers and suppliers change the rules to suit themselves irespective of what calor state,i am considering going over to the bp lite cylinder

The problem with that is that you still need to get the bottles in the first place and as BP Lite is butane you would still need to change over to Propane in the winter and therefore have two sets of bottles.
My own thoughts are that Calor have seriously underestimated the demand for the 6kg Calor Lite bottles and are slowly working new ones into the system as and when they become available. The exchange policy seems to be designed to ensure that there is availability for existing Calor Lite users.
