Wondering if people have towed that way.
Seems to be a choice between Bala - Aberystwyth - Cardigan
or
Welshpool - Llandridod Wells - Carmarthen
or
Welshpool - Aberystwyth - Cardigan.

There's a sharp turn over a narrow bridge just before Macynllyth that I don't like the look of.
Also there will be two cars towing, so we will need a nice long lay-by or something to have a tea break in.

Depends how confident you are towing!

Bala route is most direct, but it is very scenic, narrow and twisty in places. If you're using Sat-nav, ignore the instruction to turn off just before Dolgellau for the short cut through Brithdir. The narrow bridge and hairpin left adverse camber junction is something even I baulk at when towing! bettter to go down onto the Dolgellau bypass and turn left.

The bridge before Machynlleth is fine, I usually slow down at the entrance to the bridge to check if its clear before pulling on to it. The section just after Machynlleth is also quite narrow with a stone wall either side, but you can pass oncoming traffic with care.  There rest is fine, mostly!

What day are you going?  From experience I would say the laybys are all full on a Saturday lunchtime! also traffic into Aberystwyth (Llanbadarn) and Aberaeron is busy on a Saturday.

Other than that, if you are going via Welshpool for a straighter/wider road then I usually avoid the A483 Newtown to Llandrindod Wells as that is also hilly. Better take the A470 to Builth Wells and then to Llandovery. Avoid the B4358 short cut to Beulah as its also narrow.

Thanks
Its first time with new/bigger van. Our son in law will be towing our old trailer tent too. So widest is probably best.

Forgot to say,  Newtown can also get busy on a Saturday.

If you can get through it before about 9.30-10am should be OK.

I would choose Welshpool Aberystwyth cardigan. There is no way that I will ever go down the direct looking Newtown Llandrindrod well road again as to me it is 80 miles of windy road that has a lot of hills and absolutely no overtaking places. The other ways are fine.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

As a local:
First one is hilly and scenic, with potential of being easily blocked and/or busy (like it was today)

Second is adequate but hilly, If you want to go that way then follow the main road southwest from Newtown to Caersws Level Crossing and then follow the A470 south. Janus is right about the Newtown Llandrindod road!!

Third is OK, but you still have the problems between Machy and Aberystwyth, especially as that road is very narrow in places.

Personally I'd go Welshpool, Newtown, Llangurig, Rhayader, Builth, Llandovery, Llandeilo, Carmarthen. Those roads are wider and have more stopping places.
Newtown is only busy really during the start and end of the working day.
