Thought i would share with you all our misadventure on the way back from Goats Fell at Leek
Had a lovely trouble free time
Journey back seemed ok until we pulled off the motorway
i could smell something but have learnt over the years to keep my mouth shut as get accused of being a drama queen
Any how pulled off the motorway driving along a country lane to our storage when the OH says theres something wrong we're really wobbly and theres smoke from the back of the caravan!!!!
Pulled over thinking we had a puncture, but no the jockey wheel had come loose and was running along the road burning as it went

Bit phew really as I thought it was the brakes or something and new jockey wheel and clamp ordered today

Oh and thats 3 incidents in the van so I reckon weve had our bad luck

Oh dear, bad luck.

I've heard of this before (in fact there have been similar posts on here) as if not fully secured/wound tight the jockey wheel can have a tendancy to unwind and lower down. Also, the clamps can weaken and spread and this too can cause the whole thing to drop.
At least it was (relatively) minor and an easy fix.

It sounds like you were quite lucky these plastic type jockey wheels if they come loose and end up on the road can shatter when they get hot resulting in plastic shards hitting you car and caravan at 60mph causing quite a lot of damage! If that was your 3rd piece of bad luck it should be plain sailing from here on!

Hi, Jockey wheel bad enough. Lucky it was not anything worse, I always make sure that the wheel arms are located in the slots, sit wheel tight against  A frame and lift up wheel as far as I can, then lock off as if weight of van was on it, so far been lucky not had it unwind.

I have to take the jockey wheel off as the local speed humps are so high!

Actually, considering how quick this is to do (unless your jockey sits thru the 'A' frame and then it's a bit more of a pig), Jeff's probably got the best idea.
